Mixteca Organization is a grassroots organization that was founded by and continues to be run by members of the Mexican and Latin American immigrant community in South Brooklyn, NY, that has become a fixture in the immigrant community, serving over 20,000 annually. Mixteca provides an array of educational programs for adults and children including ESOL classes, basic Spanish literach courses, computer and internet literacy, an afterschool academic enrichment program for elementary and middle school students and a college and career readiness program for teens. Mixteca's health propmotion programs use trained lay community health promoters to share ciritcal, life saving health information and resources with a community that because of language and cultural differences, low educational levels, immigration status and poverty, is often overlooked or porrly served by mainstream health information and care. Mixteca staff link community members to health insurance programs and healht care, social and legal services, and provide educational advocacy to help parents help their kids succeed at school. I have worked with many organizations over the years and have rarely seen an organization accomplish so much with such limited resources. I credit Mixteca's immigrant ingenuity and the commitment of over 27 volunteer teachers and instructors who staff these programs. Mixtecca is truly a GREAT non-profit!
