Mission: Increase broadband availability in the northeast mississippi region through better infrastructure, economies of scale and education. The objective of the organization is to locate and operate, on a cooperative basis, a major point of presence (megapop) that will serve as an ultra high-capacity hub, allowing faster and cheaper connections to the internet throughout the region.
Programs: The organization utilized lease income from the capital lease of the existing fiber optic backbone to continue exploration of fiber to the home and other expansions of the broadband capacity established by the initial fiber optic build (i. E. "last mile" infrastructure). The organization also sponsored educational events to assist in training and educating the population in the region on the uses and benefits of broadband technology. Megapop continues its mission of providing infrastructure necessary to deliver advanced broadband telecommunications services needed to enhance economic development and improve quality of life for the residents of north mississippi. Megapop plans to accomplish this through the installation and expansion of existing fiber networks connecting communities throughout north mississippi. These networks will form the basis for a wholesale open access fiber transport infrastructure, across which competing retail service providers will provide services to consumers. By constructing, owning and managing the infrastructure megapop can ensure a ubiquitous distribution of the advanced telecommunications network throughout north mississippi and can assure access for competing providers thus allowing providers the ability to offer wider, more robust, cost effective services for the citizens of this region. Megapop will not be a last mile provider, instead an open access network allowing all interested providers fair and improved access to the north mississippi retail market.
