Mission: Mini-Pigs Sanctuary became a reality as we began taking in abused and abandoned potbellied pigs. We realized that potbellied pigs in the US had no advocates in either the companion animal community or the farm animal rescue community. Traditional animal shelters are unwilling or unable to rescue and care for these miniature pigs and the fact that many of these pigs do not make good indoor housepets was resulting in large numbers being abandoned and/or abused. Recently (2000) the sanctuary began taking in rescued farm pigs...thus adding a new dimension to the sanctuary. We currently house three rescued farm pigs with plans to expand the farm pig rescue facility as funds allow. The sanctuary subsists solely on private donations and grants. We accept only the most desperate and needy miniature pigs/farm pig, turning away approximately 10 pigs a week due to limited funding. We provide lifetime care, veterinary needs, a natural environment, as well as love and affection to these unwanted and unique former pets. Our goal is to return these animals to a natural, forested setting where they can live as nature intended...free from human interference and in a natural herd environment. We attempt to reduce the number of pigs needing rescue through a strict spay/neuter policy and aggressive education of owners, prospective pig owners and others across the nation. We work with other sanctuaries to rescue and place the growing number of abandoned pigs and actively work with animal rights organizations promote the right of all animals to live lives free of abuse, pain, fear and exploitation.
