Causes: Education, Preschools, Primary & Elementary Schools, Secondary & High Schools
Mission: Midtown International School serves gifted and academically superior students who thrive in small class environments. The globally-minded curriculum and problem-based instruction create a community of engaged global leaders dedicated to the values of respect, responsibility, citizenship, and justice. The school immerses students in a diversity of viewpoints that transcend national, ethnic, and socio-economic boundaries. Problem solving and critical thinking are the foundation of our integrated curriculum, developing inquisitive, flexible, and collaborative thinkers who will be successful in an ever-changing global society. MIS ignites the educational and social learning of gifted students through advanced instruction in science, math, and technology; arts integration across the curriculum; development of student leadership and peer collaboration; strategic community partnerships; and international travel for all upper elementary, middle, and high school students.
Direct beneficiaries per year: approximately 250 students K-12
Programs: Midtown international school located in Atlanta, Ga is an independent school serving gifted and academically advanced students in grades k-12. Over the last seven years, MIS has experienced significant growth, growing from only 45 students in year one to 250 students currently. We designed our school specifically for gifted students who need challenging, authentic, and creative work to stay academically engaged. Our approach values collaborative problem solving, critical thinking, and co-learning among students and between student and teacher over memorization and “top-down” approaches. Our small class sizes (of 12 max!) create an environment where everyone is challenged and supported, every day. And this happens all in a space where students feel the joy inherent in discovery, in deciphering complexity, in stepping outside their comfort zone, in creating original works, and in learning itself. Our international component—global languages beginning in kindergarten, domestic travel beginning in third grade, and international travel beginning in fifth—stretches gifted learners in profound ways and keeps them engaged in boundary-crossing, perspective-widening pursuits. Often times, the gifted learner moves too quickly at a more traditional school, and, in waiting for the rest of the class, shows signs of boredom which can be misinterpreted or fed with just more and more work. So we created MIS as a haven for the gifted learner, and unite each day around the promise that no one—no child, no teacher, no parent, no staff member—should wait to learn. Which is precisely why learning at MIS is so kinetic, so contagious, and so woven into our lives not just while at school, but forevermore.
