Causes: Charter Schools, Education
Mission: The mission of the middle village preparatory charter school (mvp) is to prepare students for success at a selective college prep high school of their choice. The mvp curriculum is a rigorous curriculum designed to meet and surpass the nys education department requirements.
Programs: In the 2016-17 school year, the fourth of operation, middle village prep was named a "rewards" school by the new york state education department. The rewards school designation is given to schools that either have high academic achievement or have made the most progress in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement between subgroups. There were 220 schools that received that designation state-wide. Middle village prep, was one of only 11 charter schools to be named on the list. Middle village prep continues to offer full support to its students through the implementation of rigorous curriculum and exciting programs that complement subject core areas. The increase in student enrollment from its original registers of 229 to 370 students has enabled the administration to hire six additional staff members, including three special education teachers. Mvp's instructional program continues to offer algebra and earth science courses to all its 8th grade students. These high school level courses prepared students to successfully take the regents for the algebra 1 and earth science regents exams, of which passing rates reached 85% and 50%, respectively. In addition, 8th graders are given the opportunity to take the latin proficiency exam of which the passing rate was 85%. These three exams are taking into consideration when our graduating students transition to high school, as they receive credits for each course. This also allow our students to participate and complete advanced placement (ap) college courses in high school. The stem (robotics), health education and performance arts programs continue to be in our scholastic course offerings. We added a full time visual arts program in which all grades have the opportunity to participate. The use of tablets in our 7th & 8th grade continues to be enhanced, supporting students as they improve their abilities to use technology in different forms: they have access to many resources including the use of microsoft office for projects and presentations, as well as google classroom for collaborative work. Students at mvp have developed their individual talents, critical to the learning process. Middle village prep places a strong emphasis in providing professional development opportunities to all its staff members. This year we secured the coaching and support services from teachers college columbia. A team of instructional coaches offer "one to one" support to select teachers and provide whole group training in best teaching practices with a lens on the "framework for teaching. " the "fft" identifies those aspects of a teacher's responsibilities that have been documented through empirical studies and theoretical research as promoting improved student learning. Enabling teachers to be truly skillful in their craft through proper training and support, gives our students an assurance that they will successfully transition to their next grade level and will be prepared for college and career plans. Our teachers prepare our students to attain grade level or higher when it comes to state testing. We use school wide, city and state assessments and data to monitor student progress, as they meet and master each standard on grade level. The latest data provided by the state and nyc reflects that our school as a whole reached 60% levels of proficiency in mathematics, an increase of 13% points from the previous year. In ela, our students demonstrated 56% proficiency, an increase of 12% points in comparison to the previous year. Our students surpassed the proficiency levels for both math and ela by 16% points in comparison to the rest of nys. City wide, our students surpassed the city average of 41% by 17% points in ela and 27% points in math. Our students attendance average is 97%, 15% points above nyc public schools. We continue to have students whose average is 90% or higher in all subject areas to be a part of the national junior honor society. The teachers at middle village prep have a continuous commitment to improvement and ensure that our students are well rounded, self-directed life-long learners. Administration, teachers, students and parents share the responsibility for creating a school culture of a family atmosphere making sure that each child's needs are met and that they receive the support and encouragement that they need to meet the rigorous curriculum offered by middle village prep. The after school program is an extension to the school day allowing students the opportunity to receive homework help, join clubs, and participate in sports or other activities.
as mentioned in our gen ed program, accomplishments, the rewards school designation is given to schools that either have high academic achievement or have made the most progress in the state and do not have significant gaps in student achievement between subgroups. Mvp's special education staff supports struggling students by using data-driven instruction. Following the nys common core standards, and setting forth a culture of high expectations, mvp focuses on working diligently to promote independence, so that by the time students graduate from middle village prep they will be successful not only in high school but also for college. Our special education teachers are sent to the most up to date workshop trainings and are constantly making the appropriate modifications and accommodations to those who are performing on or below grade level so that they may be successful not only academically but socially and emotionally. In addition, through assessments, both state and local, our students are performing at proficiency and achieving their measurable goals. Many of mvp's special education students entered sixth grade performing below grade level and are now performing proficient in both ela and math. One of our accomplishments is several of our special education students have been accepted into the national junior honor society. Another accomplishment that we have achieved is to establish a stronger bond among parents, staff and administrators. Mvp has set a mission to support academic excellence for all types of learners. We believe that student learning is the main priority and all students can learn to their fullest potential as we prepare them for college and career readiness.
