Mission: Middle susquehanna riverkeeper association, inc. Was formed to support the clean water advocacy work of the middle susquehanna river, the waterkeeper alliance-licensed voice for the middle susquehanna river watershed, defined by the approximate 11,000 square mile drainage area of the north and west branches of the susquehanna river, pennsylvania.
Programs: Outreach education - in 2017 we focused much of our efforts on community outreach and public education programming. Some highlights include work with our lady of lourdes regional high schools environmental science class, interactive exhibits for the public at various community events and festivals, numberous public speaking engagements at civic organization meetings, mentorships with local college students and organizations, informative presentations at conferences and workshops, frequent morning talk radio programs disseminated to community members, and the sharing of educational information through social media and public relations.
patrol investigation - we hold polluters responsible, and this accountability action often begins with pollution patrol investigation work. Highlights for 2017-investigation on the sunoco pipeline rupture and spill into a tributary, initiated an investigation regarding an inflection energy operator-error spill on a natural gas well pad in the watershed, continued ongoing water quality monitoring at linear construction projects crossing waterways, conducted file reviews with pa dep, and trained citizen scientists to be the extra eyes of the watershed.
second annual sunrise sunset susquehanna paddle play-annual community engagement paddling event was once again selected as a national toyota splash event and included a 12-mile river adventure from jersey shore to williamsport for 65 paddlers, an afternoon of environmental education and wellness activities at susquehanna state park in williamsport with over 20 partner organizations, and an evening bird-watching excursion on the hiawatha paddlewheel riverboat. The primary goal of this annual program is to raise awareness of the mission of our organization through community programming.
