Mission: The Microcredit Summit Campaign, a project of RESULTS Educational Fund, is a global advocacy organization whose members have dedicated to these two goals: reaching 175 million poorest families with microfinance; and helping 100 million families lift themselves above the US$1.25 a day threshold by 2015. The Campaign convenes microfinance practitioners, advocates, educational institutions, donor agencies, international financial institutions, non-governmental organizations, and others involved with microfinance to promote best practices in the field, to stimulate the interchanging of knowledge, and to work towards reaching our goals. They are committed to reach the poorest, reach & empower women, build financial self-sustainability, and ensure positive & measureable outcomes. Microfinance institutions (MFIs) report client outreach data to the Campaign through the Institutional Action Plan (IAP) in order to help the industry to measure progress toward these two goals set in 2006.
Results: As of December 31, 2011, 3,703 microfinance institutions reported to the Microcredit Summit Campaign that they are reaching 195 million clients, 124 million of whom were among the poorest when they took their first loan. Of these poorest clients, 83%, or 103 million, are women. Approximately 89% of the poorest clients reported are in Asia, a continent that is home to just over 66% of the world’s people living on less than $1.25 a day. In 2012, 637 practitioner institutions submitted an IAP, including 49 that had previously never done so. These 637 practitioners had 89% of all the poorest clients reported. This means that the data in this report is 89% current, and the remaining 11% is one or more years old.
