Mission: The michigan statewide independent living corporations (corporation) main purpose is to provide administrative and fiduciary services to the michigan statewide independent living council (council). The council was established to promote a philosophy of independent living, including a philosophy of consumer control, peer support, self help, self determination, equal access, and individual and system advocacy, in order to maximize the leadership, empowerment, independence, and productivity of individuals with disabilities, and their integration and full inclusion into the mainstream of american society.
Programs: The michgian statewide independent living council (silc) is dedicated to the task of ensuring equal access to all aspects of society for people with disabilities. It does this though the eleven governor appointed council members and 5 ex-officio officers. Together these council members engage in advocacy, education, support of the michigan centers for independent living network and the creation of the state plan for independent living. In 2017, over 35,000 individuals received services from the independent living network, including over 3,500 individually completed outcomes. This also included over 250 individuals with disabilities leaving nursing homes and returning to community based independent living.
