Mission: To support and empower nonprofit community organizations in michigan that serve low-income individuals and communities, with an emphasis on fostering community economic development and pro bono legal services.
Programs: Mcr provides legal services to community-based organizations including pro bono legal referrals, legal publications, workshops, and clinics. Mcr provided pro bono referral services to nonprofit organizations on 180 different legal matters, held several legal workshops, and produced 2 legal publications. Mcr recruited dedicated volunteer attorneys in law firms and corporate counsel officers to represent nonprofit clients and help these organizations accomplish their missions with a pool of more than 100 active volunteer attorneys. Mcr worked on numerous projects, providing data gathering, analysis and reporting to support community economic development in the city of detroit. Mcr convened a worktable of over 40 business support organizations to address policy issues, create original resources, and build the capacity of business service organizations across detroit. Mcr developed economic development tools including a tool for community-based groups to develop group purchasing programs. Mcr provided a range of educational opportunities for community-based organizations on issues relating to neighborhood improvement and organizational development. Mcr hosted 14 educational & networking events to bring community stakeholders together to share and learn from each other. Mcr provided one-on-one technical assistance through office hours to 53 organizations over 15 sessions. Mcr awarded green stormwater infrastructure mini-grants to 5 nonprofit community groups to implement practices that will reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, and educate residents about stormwater management.
