Causes: Education
Mission: Metas is an organization that aims to spread training on blindness skills in mexico though a lens of structured discovery and cultural sensitivity. We provide the expertise to teachers and professionals working with blind adults and children so that local professionals can continue to foster a positive atmosphere. We use research based practices in working with the blind and professionals in the field. Metas is a non profit organization working in mexico to build a community of inclusion around blind and low vision students. Currently 60% of blind and low vision students in mexico do not have access to any type of education. We hope to close that gap by working with educators and giving them the tools necessary to provide high quality instruction. With your help we can reach our goals of education for the blind in mexico.
Programs: The #metasmexico17 project returned our focus in guadalajara, mexico. La escuela de ninos ciegos (school for blind children) once again served as our point of reference in hands-on mentorship for teachers and students. Metas applied a train the trainer model in coordination with school administration. We believe in evidence-based teaching approaches and mentoring as key components to our work. Metas mentored and worked directly with 10 teachers and 25 students in the areas of orientation and mobility, daily living skills, philosophy, and. Braille. Mariana, one of our awesome students summed it all up with her words, "this week i learned braille, how to write, and how to play sports for blind people! " to support student's families metas also hosted a parent seminar answering parent questions and fears about the education and life of ther blind child. Metas was able to reach students, teachers and parents through this project.
metas was able to host a internship program for the first time. In conjunction with blind services and industries of maryland we were able to have an intern for our guadalajara trip. The intern served as an interpreter and provided valuable services to our team and our group in mexico. She gained work experience, as well as experience in blindness skills in travel, communication and problem solving. We will continue to host our internship program in the future.
