Mission: Medical Training Worldwide (MTW), founded in 1997, grew out of the personal volunteer teaching experiences of three physicians. Our focus in teaching and capacitation of physicians and nurses in developing countries who do not practice modern less-invasive surgery because of lack of access to training and equipment. MTW provides intensive on-site courses that include didactics, laboratory training, one-on-one tutoring, and computer tracking of clinical outcomes. With these techniques, we have been able to fully and safely train 44 surgeons in two years in laparoscopic gallbladder surgery, in addition to other specialties. Our organization uses a distributed internet-centric model, emphasizing communication and mobilization of people and resources from around the globe to achieve well-defined health care objectives at chosen sites in developing countries. Our vision is to apply modern intensive training techniques to bring less-invasive surgery and other medical techniques to all people and all countries where they would benefit the population.
