Programs: Home delivered nutrition - in 2016, meals on wheels of ri, inc. , served 2,567 unduplicated clients on 78 routes statewide. A total of 345,262 meals were served to those in need over the course of 2016. This total includes 7,480 emergency shelf stable meals for occasions when we are unable to deliver due to severe weather or unforeseen circumstances. We also delivered 9,002 frozen meals (on a weekly basis) to those individuals who reside in areas where no delivery services are available. The offering of holiday meals was introduced on september 7, 2015. In 2016, 12,560 holiday meals were delivered. Week-end meals began as a pilot program on september 19, 2015. By year end in 2016, 32,451 week-end meals were provided as requested by the recipients. On march 23, 2016, soup was added as a component to the regular meal delivery one day per week. In 2016, we delivered 17,885 servings of soup. Over 700 dedicated volunteers, many of whom have been delivering meals for several years, utilize their own vehicles and donate their time and labor. They report regularly, at least once per week, even in inclement weather to deliver to the homebound recipients. The estimated value of their annual in-kind service to the agency totals almost $651,000. The additional benefit of receiving this service is the daily wellness check provided for all of our homebound and frail recipients. On several occasions, this daily contact has proven to be a life saving measure for many. We anticipate that the client base will remain unchanged for 2017.
congregate nutrition - the congregate nutrition program operates for the purpose of providing hot, nutritious meals to the senior population as well as persons under 60 years of age who are disabled. During 2016, meals on wheels of rhode island served approximately 90 meals per day at 8 senior cafes throughout providence and cranston; with one of those cafes being an ethnic site and another location serving the senior lgbt community. The congregate program offers not only the daily meal but also socialization, which is another essential component of a person's well-being. An evening meal is also served at one of the housing locations in order to continue providing the hot meal and the socialization at an additional time. The meals are provided monday through friday to over 450 unduplicated individuals throughout the year. About 20 volunteers assist in the day to day operation of the cafes, making the success of the program possible. The in-kind value of their donated service totals over $126,000. The restaurant program is another part of the nutrition program which was designed for seniors who are more active and who are able to visit restaurants as part of this active lifestyle. Currently, participants have the choice of dining at 5 local restaurants and their locations throughout the state.
