Mission: McPherson Housing Coalition, Inc. (MHC) is an alliance of community members whose mission is to develop, promote, and implement programs that provide affordable, decent, and quality housing to eligible families. We strengthen communities by providing housing opportunities and supportive services to improve the quality of life and economic stability for seniors, working families, and individuals. MHC is committed to operating efficiently, ethically, and professionally. We seek to partner with residents, businesses, industries, and government entities to enhance the quality of life for those we serve, utilizing appropriate resources and funding from all available sources.
Results: As of 2022, we have helped hundreds of seniors remain in their homes through the annual County-wide Brush Up Mac day. Volunteers have completed minor repair work, installed wheelchair ramps, mowed lawns, and trimmed bushes. This all-volunteer day is crucial to seniors who want to stay in their homes but cannot afford to hire someone to make repairs. There is no cost for this service to the person living in the home. Additionally, the Oak Harbor Cottages Emergency Shelter has begun sheltering families with nowhere to go. Not only have they found a safe, fully furnished home for 90 days, but they have been receiving medical care, legal counsel, and case management. Many have been able to get back on their feet and moved into permanent housing and better jobs.
Target demographics: Low-income families find safe, decent and affordable Housing.
Direct beneficiaries per year: 100 Families get back on their feet, through housing stability.
Geographic areas served: McPherson County Kansas
Programs: The Annual Brush Up Mac program brings together hundreds of volunteers to work on homes for vulnerable seniors, allowing them to staff be safely in their homes. We have developed a non-congregate shelter called the Oak Harbor Cottages that allows families to stay together when they have nowhere to go. These fully furnished homes provide a safe cottage, while the families receive case management and wrap-around services such as health, mental and dental care, legal service, educational services, and job opportunities. We are in the process of developing a village that will be permanent supportive housing for those who struggle to make ends meet and need additional services. We have programs to allow those struggling to remain stably housed or to assist with rental assistance.
