A multidisciplinary team of experts has ready access to knowledge, resources, and expertise of mayo clinic and collaborates on providing exactly the care the patient needs. Mayo clinic health system sites employ approximately 1,000 physicians and 15,000 allied health staff. In addition, mayo clinic physicians from multiple specialties regularly see patients at health system facilities. Besides having health care facilities in nearly 70 communities, mayo clinic health system includes 19 owned hospitals, five owned nursing homes, physician service agreements with one additional hospital, and contract management agreements with two additional hospitals and one nursing home. Since its inception in 1992, mayo clinic health system has grown into one of the most successful regional health care systems in the united states. More than 600,000 unique patients account for more than 2. 6 million visits annually in mayo clinic health system. It is also a national leader in quality and safety efforts. As part of the mayo clinic health system, mchs-owatonna is organized and operated as a nonprofit multi-specialty clinic providing health care services at its main clinic facilities in owatonna and faribault, minnesota. Mchs-owatonna staff includes physicians in a variety of specialty fields including: family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics/gynecology, dermatology, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pediatrics, plastic & reconstructive surgery, urology, urgent care and emergency medicine. Mchs-owatonna offers comprehensive laboratory, diagnostic, pain management and infusion therapy services like chemotherapy for area cancer patients. Specialty physicians in general surgery, obstetrics, otolaryngology and orthopedic surgery see patients at other area clinics and hospitals providing specialty care and critical on-call support. The hospitals that benefit from this care and on-call support are exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the code, and many are related hospitals in the mayo clinic health system. A team of outreach specialists from mayo clinic see patients locally, providing consultation and care in cardiology, oncology, neurology, nephrology, and dialysis. Mchs-owatonna recorded 155,702 primary care visits and 291,652 radiology and lab tests for 2014. Charity care: mchs-owatonna provides a variety of financial assistance options to patients who meet established criteria. Services are also provided to both medicare and medicaid patients at substantial discounts from standard fees. The cost of charity care provided during 2014 was approximately $2,113,800. The cost of uncompensated medicaid for 2014 was approximately $8,846,400. This amount includes mncare tax of $1,294,916 (a program that provides healthcare for low income populations). The unreimbursed cost of medicare was approximately $13,888,900. Mchs-owatonna also leases space and provides support services to affiliated organizations to help further their exempt purpose related to patient care.
