education (see schedule o)mayo clinic hospital - rochester is integral to the education programs of mayo clinic college of medicine, providing essential clinical care experiences for residents, students and trainees. As a teaching hospital, mayo clinic hospital - rochester provided educational experience to the more than 1,665 residents of the mayo school of graduate medical education in 2014. Mayo clinic hospital - rochester provides clinical experiences for several mayo school of health sciences programs. These include a dietetic internship program, pharmacy residency program, chaplaincy internship program, nurse anesthesia, clinical pastoral education and others. Undergraduate clinical nursing experience is offered to students through affiliations with a number of nursing school programs. In addition, an administrative internship program is sponsored by mayo clinic hospital - rochester. Echocardiography and cardiovascular invasive specialist programs within the mayo school of health sciences are also based at mayo clinic hospital - rochester.
community activities & services and other (see schedule o): several subsidized community activities and services are offered by the hospital. Community education activities include a variety of childbirth and prenatal education classes including cesarean birth, six-week prenatal, prenatal comfort measures, infant massage, sibling preparation, magnificent multiples, infant passenger safety and grandparenting. Livestrong exercise programs specially developed and offered for post-treatment cancer patients are also available and falls prevention education and awareness for adult and pediatric populations are other specialty programs available. Mayo clinic hospital - rochester also offers teen traffic safety schools with presentations and interactive learning activities, underage alcohol and chemical trauma-related education and awareness, adult traffic safety through community events and safety fairs, bike safety helmet education and child passenger education. Mayo clinic hospital - rochester conducts daily chapel services open to the public and has a healthy living center for employees and their families. Mayo clinic hospital - rochester, has very active and engaged volunteers. In 2014, 674 active volunteers provided 76,821 hours of donated time in service to the patients, visitors and staff of the hospital. The estimated value of the time donated by these hospital volunteers was approximately $1,772,260, as valued by the independent sector's average estimated hourly value of such service. Some of the activities of the volunteers include:volunteers provide the "come & see program", a class for first grade students to introduce them in a non-threatening way to the hospital and to being a patient. A pediatric nurse conducts the class and includes all class participants in role-play situations. From admission to discharge, students learn about blood draws, vital signs, a surgical procedure (tonsillectomy), x-rays, and much more. The volunteers pay for the busing for students from rochester school district #535 as well as the cost of the items for a take-home bag. Volunteer staff schedule and coordinate these classes. For the 2013-2014 school year the program hosted 1,808 first grade students from 80 classrooms from rochester school district #535, rochester catholic schools, rochester central lutheran school and schaeffer academy as well as public schools in the surrounding communities of byron, chatfield and lewiston-altura. 152 volunteers staff the hospital gift shops under the direction of a paid supervisor. Gift shop proceeds are donated to the poverello and good samaritan fund and used to help needy mayo clinic hospital - rochester patients' pay their hospital bills. The remaining proceeds provide funding for the volunteer's growth fund and other activities such as heart & lung pillows. Volunteers provide staffing to assist patients and families in the emergency department, surgical waiting areas, visitor cafeterias, information/welcome desks, pediatric outpatient desk and cast room. Volunteers offer hospitality services to patients and family members such as a picture cart offering patients a choice of framed art for their rooms during their stay, surgical messengers working with nurse communicators to keep families informed on the day of surgery and patient comfort items, such as fresh water and warm blankets for inpatients volunteers staff the hospital library circulation desk and provide books, magazines and audiovisual items to patients and visitors. The volunteers also offer book cart services to deliver materials to patients in their hospital room. Volunteers sew stuffed animals that are distributed to pediatric patients in the emergency room, same-day surgery and radiology areas. Other items produced by volunteers include craniotomy caps, crutch caddies, wheelchair and bed caddies, baby quilts, knitted caps and booties for nicu patients, toe cozies for orthopedic patients, cloth memory envelopes for bereaved families and prayer shawls. These items are provided to patients at no charge. Trained volunteers provided over 6,500 hand massages to patients, family members and staff. Volunteers provided vigil companions to patients in their last hours of life who have no family or friends to be with them through a program called "no-one dies alone". The auxiliary also administers the mayo clinic erickson hair and skin care center to provide products, services and education for patients experiencing the cosmetic side effects of cancer treatment. The center was developed in response to emotional suffering experienced by individuals who lose their hair because of chemotherapy or other cancer treatments. The center, which is staffed by 2 licensed cosmetologists and 12 auxilians, provides wigs and caps at no cost to patients. During the past year, they served more than 1,866 patients, gave away 320 wigs and 740 caps. In addition, the center provided "look good, feel better" classes for cancer patients. In 2014, 12 group classes were offered serving 70 patients.
