We discovered this gem of a museum when we relocated to the Southcoast area in 2020. The staff is friendly and accessible, the exhibits not only historically interesting but most often presented with a perspective that is relevant to the issues we face today. Mattapoisett Museum is active in the schools and community and feels just as much a community center as a museum.
The Mattapoisett Museum is a great example of how the effort and compassion of a small group of people can benefit a whole community. So much thought and time is put into the smallest exhibits and details, all in the name of preserving and showcasing the history of Mattapoisett and the greater Southcoast Massachusetts. As a volunteer there, I have been asked to transcribe journals from past decades and centuries, getting a glimpse into the past of my community and preserving that history for the future.
The Mattapoisett Museum might not be the largest organization, but they definitely make up for it with how much work they put into every single event, project, and the maintaining of history. With amazing volunteers like Jessica, the Mattapoisett Museum beautifully lets you glimpse into the past of the local area and especially the small town of Mattapoisett itself.
The Mattapoisett Museum is a great representation of all that our town has to offer! Being a volunteer has been a great experience, and has taught me so much about our town. It is so important to make sure history of our town is preserved and shared! Our recent events have had great turn out, and it is super exciting to see the community come together for such a great cause.
Brought my Fairhaven husband in two years ago. We are members and enjoy the programming you offer. I recommend this place to anyone from locals to tourists. All ages. A wonderful gem in my Hometown.

The Mattapoisett Museum has been a part of my life since I was a child. I visited every summer, volunteered as a young person, and even curated a children's art exhibit when I was 10 years old. Our museum chronicles our town's history, celebrates our culture, and continues to find new ways to be relevant in-person and online. As a dues-paying member and Board Member, I am proud of how the museum interprets local history and culture and engages future generations through interesting and unique programming.
this museum is a gem with many authentic artifacts representative of new england sea side
villages
the revolving exhibits are unique and attest to the many contributions to whaling. sailing, and new england daily life in various periods of history
the lectures are invaluable, with the recordings of emeritus seth mendell a treasure of local history
My sole experience with this organization occurred two Friday's ago when I appeared to perform at the open mic. What a delight! Certainly an old musician's oasis: a receptive and appreciative audience, an intimate venue, a series of engaging performers, an efficient and gracious host, and in all ways, a well-organized event. In this world that unfortunately is becoming more chaotic, more indifferent, more selfish and disconnected and divisive, it was such a welcome sanctuary to sing and listen to others for a sacred two hours and leave convinced not only that all is not lost but that, one concert at a time, we can put everything back together again..... Super interactive with the community and on facebook. Soooo much history for such a small town, always surprised by the findings and contributions from the people of Mattapoisett, Ma.
An impressive and welcoming treasure in this beautiful seaside community. The Mattapoisett Museum boldly and capably blends a respect and study of the past with a forward looking embrace of the importance of building new community and culture based on those same historic roots. The diversity and inclusiveness of their programming ensures that every member of the community across nearly every demographic can find something of interest, of value, and of learning.
Super, museum with a wide variety of fascinating exhibits. Very small, but worth a visit. They have some great social activities as well.
A small local history museum with big ambitions, the Mattapoisett Museum has come a long way to grow beyond a traditional historical society. With offering such as concerts, interpretive art and history exhibits, creative programing for children, and amazing collections that have documented local history, this museum provides a great resource for the community.
Great job preserving the town history, we love seeing the historical pictures of people and places around town! Especially learning about the history of the whaling ships and the wharf
Quaint museum in the seaside town of Mattapoisett beautifully represents the town's ship building during the whailing days of the 1800s. This museum also has artifacts from businesses that formerly operated in town. The museum is housed in an 1821 church which is beautiful on its own.
