Mission: Marine conservation is dedicated to securing permanent, strong protection for the oceans' most important places for us and future generations.
Results: In 2012, Marine Conservation Institute: • Co-chaired an effort to reduce ship strikes of whales in Marine Protected Areas in northern California; • Supported strong marine law enforcement in the US Pacific Marine National Monuments; • Identified habitats in the Gulf of Mexico, Pacific Northwest, and Northeast Atlantic as strong candidates for Marine Protected Areas • Launched the website MPAtlas.org to allow users worldwide to explore and better understand Marine Protected Areas; • Helped shape the U.S. National Ocean Policy under President Obama and is contributing information to the Biden 30x30 plan; • Advocated for stronger protection of the Hawaiian monk seal, including outreach to native Hawaiian fishing communities; • Educated members of Congress and their staff on emerging marine science issues such as ocean acidification; • Led a coalition of nonprofit organizations to address pressing oceans issues; • Built a growing network of Blue Parks and Blue Sparks marine protected areas to catalyze strong protection for the world's oceans.
Programs: Marine Conservation Institute promotes ocean conservation through identifying important ecological places and advocating for their protection. The Blue Parks initiative incentivizes a global ocean refuge system to safeguard biodiversity in at least 30% of the ocean. Blue Park Awards recognize outstanding marine protected areas (MPAs), and the Blue Park criteria provide a science-based standard for marine conservation effectiveness. Since 2017, more than 20 MPAs have been awarded Blue Parks awards. The Marine Protection Atlas (www.MPAtlas.org), a project of Marine Conservation Institute, was launched in 2012 as a way to provide a more nuanced picture of global marine protection. We aim to clarify, calculate and visualize the level of protection and implementation of the world's marine protected areas (MPAs). Our primary goal is to identify and track fully and highly protected areas.
