Programs: Site restoration projects: malama learning center (mlc) has formally and informally adopted natural areas in the leeward oahu region to revegetate with native hawaiian plant species to make these areas healthier and useful for the community. Areas include: piliokahe beach park, kalaeloa unit of the pearl harbor national wildlife refuge, zablan's beach at nanakuli, and palehua. Data is collected to better understand the techniques that lead to a higher rate of survival of these plants. Through education, mlc involves the community throughout the process of growing plants, outplanting them, and removing invasive species
malama aina field school: this summer program has been held at nanakuli high and intermediate school since 2013. Malama learning center created the malama aina field school with partner organizations to help students learn science, math, and other subject areas through environmental education that is place-based and experiential in nature. A high percentage of students enrolled in this program have needed "recovery" course credits in order to proceed to the next grade level and the malama aina field school has helped them do that.
hgci - hawaii green collar institute: the hawaii green collar institute (hgci) is another program created by the malama learning center in partnership with leeward community college. Through this institute, malama learning center offers a variety of short courses for both students and teachers, primarily living or working in leeward o'ahu, based on subjects related to sustainability and green careers. Course themes have included: marine debris, coastal ecosystems, watersheds and wetlands, aquaponics, limu (seaweed), agriculture, and a combination of all of the above. Since 2010, malama learning center has conducted more than 22 courses.
