Mission: Magic engages people in learning and applying methods and principles of ecology. Each of us asks many times daily, consciously and unconsciously, What do I want? How can I get it? From our responses to these questions--our values--we generate our behaviors and their consequences. All of us harbor misinformation about value: we get what we thought we wanted and feel less satisfaction than we'd imagined; we do what we think sufficient and fall short. Ideas about value are predictions. Ecology--scientific study of interactions between life (including humans) and surroundings (including other people, other life, and abiotic entities, both natural and artificial)--is the sole known means for improving predictions about human actions and their consequences. Each of us can evolve her or his practice of ecology to better discern and realize value. As we do so, we enjoy more and suffer less and we contribute better to others doing so.
Programs: Magic offers diverse educational programs rooted in four interwoven themes: clarifying values, becoming healthy and self-aware, cooperating for common good, and protecting the environmental qualities on which human well-being depends. Research: We've two major and several minor projects underway. We?ve published findings from both major projects in peer-reviewed journals and anticipate publishing additional results as we obtain them. In the first study, begun more than twenty years ago, we?re testing strategies for California oak habitat stewardship and oak population regeneration. In the second, we?re investigating how to more effectively apply riparian law to conserve or restore ecological integrity to the Willamette river-floodplain system and to similar systems nationwide. Teaching: We teach classes and workshops spanning a broad range of topics. These include: ecological axiology, life-planning, interpersonal communication and conflict resolution, and hatha yoga. We also offer individually-tailored instruction through residential service/learning, environmental stewardship, mentoring, mediation, and aerobic conditioning programs.
