Causes: Congregate Meals, Food, Food Programs, Nutrition
Mission: Our mission is to provide healthy meals to Minnesotans in areas where need is greatest. Our enhanced mission emphasizes well-balanced nutrition in every meal, to include local farm-to-table dining. We are always guided by our vision that all people, regardless of socioeconomic, cultural, religious, or ethnic background, deserve to meet their basic needs for food, dignity and respect. Throughout our programming, we serve without regard to religious perspective and do not engage in activities that promote any religious cause.
Results: Loaves and Fishes provides over one million healthy meals annually in Minnesota.
Target demographics: We serve anyone in need, helping Minnesotans of all ages, genders, races, ethnicities, immigrant status', family structures, and religious perspectives. Some are experiencing a short-term crisis, transition, or are new to an area. Others suffer mental illness, disabilities, or generational poverty. People served are disabled, low-income, unemployed, under-employed, retired, with criminal records, precariously housed, homeless and in transitional housing.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 90,000 Minnesotans
Geographic areas served: We serve urban, suburban and rural Minnesota. Our holistic recipe for success in Minnesota is predicated on the belief that food is medicine and a basic human right, serving just any kind of food to people in need is unsatisfactory as well as costly to people and communities, and proper nutrition opens the door to opportunity.
Programs: Our multi-faceted meal programming improves the health and well-being of people served and includes: public dining, additional summer sites for children and youth when school is out of session, after-school meals and snacks for students, street outreach, a free produce market, and The HUB – an affordable fresh food sourcing opportunity that benefits small community meal programs, nonprofits, and the populations they serve. All our meal programming is supported by creative food sourcing that includes food rescued from restaurants, schools and businesses; fresh produce grown at our own farm and gardens; and produce received as Minnesota’s only re-distributor of Second Harvest Heartland food.
