Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area (LVWA) is a wonderful organization that helps the local population in so many ways. This is my 9th year as a tutor, which means I’ve had the opportunity to help so many people learn and improve their lives. Our students are so brave and hard-working. Brave, because it’s so difficult to admit to needing help. Hard-working, because they somehow find the time and energy to continue their education.

Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area (LVWA) is a wonderful organization that helps the local population in so many different ways. I have been privileged to be a tutor, both in a classroom setting and one-on-one. I absolutely love that my students frequently tell me that they wish they had encountered teachers like me when they were first in school because they would have learned & enjoyed their subjects more. While the students receive knowledge, I also benefit from the opportunity to give back to my community. I joined the Board 2 years ago to expand my involvement and impact.
I joined Literacy Volunteers as a tutor at the start of 2024, after searching for opportunities to give back to the community. Although I expected the work to be rewarding, I was not prepared for the joy from witnessing the progress my student is making and the friendship that developed.
If you are looking for ways to help your community, please consider joining this wonderful non-profit as a volunteer. The staff is amazing and will provide you with the skills needed to be successful as a tutor. If teaching a class or tutoring a new reader is not something you are comfortable doing, you can also support Literacy Volunteers through financial contributions.
Literacy is critical to success, individually and collectively. It’s never too late to learn or to give back.
Literacy Volunteers Winchester Area has been an amazing partner with my church and in our community. With their help, we have been able to create a multi-generational program at the church that connects us to the Latinx/Hispanic community through literacy and fellowship. Working with LVWA is a great experience and I am so glad that I have the opportunity to work with and support them.
Three years later and this organization continues to amaze me. Their dedication to the community and forming partnerships with other organizations to bring literacy to Winchester is a wonderful thing. Family literacy means everyone and they have figured out ways to assist both adults and young children to help bridge the gap in the reading crisis. I will continue to watch for more good things from them and if I might add, bringing the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in reach of our community is my favorite thing.

As a customer, they are always there whenever I need help with anything, I know sometimes they are doing things to help me that are not part of their services but they never turn me away. I appreciate that I feel like somebodies always listening and cares about my welfare and never tring to sell me anything, They even go as far as emailing me jobs that they learn about that I may be able to get. We are so lucky to have such a dedicated organization in our area.
I choose to donate to LVWA for two reasons: 1) their mission to strengthening community through literacy, education, and advocacy is one I see as foundational to collective thriving, and 2) the Literacy staff always goes above and beyond for their students, volunteers, donors, and partner organizations.
I have been working alongside and volunteering with the Winchester Area Literacy Volunteers for almost a year. Their dedication, enthusiasm and commitment to helping our community is contagious and well appreciated. Thank you for all you do!
I found that Literacy Volunteers is a great nonprofit organization because it helps a huge amount of people that do not have the ability to read and write English. I also love that they help bring the community together by hosting events and gatherings around the city.
LVWA is a community-focused organization that strives to support not only its own mission but those of other non-profits in the community. Their collaboration efforts are a solid win for all residents of the Winchester Area.

Great local non-profit that brings literacy resources to our community. The recent partnership with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a huge win for our young children, who are just beginning to love books. Volunteering here is a no-brainer!
This organization goes above and beyond for its students and community. Often they help with things that they don't even offer like helping find lawyers or other services needed where they have to spend time calling around and seeing if anyone can help.
This organization continues to help members of our community achieve their goals for a better personal and professional life, by helping them learn to read and write, or learn English as second language, or help them with their path to citizenship.
The hard work and dedication, passion and care by Literacy Volunteers-Winchester Area's staff and volunteers continues to be an inspiration to me, and throughout our community.

This non-profit goes above and beyond to assist clients with any needs they may have. In addition to their regular services of reading, writing, math, and English services, they help people find attorneys, help people pass their driver's test, and help them find food and lodging assistance. During the pandemic, they assisted at the vaccine clinic.
