Causes: Children & Youth, Crime & Law, Youth Violence Prevention
Mission: Provide positive alternatives to violence, and develop teens and young adults into peer leaders. L. I. F. E camp builds partnerships between com-munity stakeholders within the public and private sectors,to collec-tively and collaboratively address youth violence as a public issue.
Programs: In 2016, life camps incorporated made significant progress in its target area of jamaica, queens, ny. As a key player and leader in the nyc crisis management system, gun violence has continued to decrease. Our reporting has found that the rate of shootings in our target area continues to be significantly lower than the overall citywide rate. Our program and work has broadened to include work in partner hospitals, correctional facilities, and with several high schools and junior high schools in the borough of queens. By implemting a holistic approaach through active violence interrruption, conflict resoultion, and unconventional therapeutic services, we have gained a greater confidence in our program by key stakeholders including direct and indirect victims of gun violence, educators, law enforcement, and the community at large.
