Mission: The primary purpose of licking downtown, inc is to educate the local community about grants/sources for improvements in licking, missouri. The public has benefitted because donations and grant monies were used for public and infrastructure improvements. Such improvements included but were not limited to sidewalks, lighting, and proper water drainage. Thereby, public safety and facility accessibility by disabled persons were be enhanced through these programs. In 2009, a local organization, licking betterment association, dissolved and transferred all of its assets according to missouri law to licking downtown, inc. The assets transferred included cash in the checking account and a historical building, the licking mill. The mill is a focal point in the community and the current year activities may include continued renovation, christmas lighting, historical and musical programs. Programs: A 3 on 3 basketball tournament is held annually at licking high school which brings in hundreds of people to downtown licking. The proceeds are used for the various improvements to downtown licking and includes continued maintenance of the flag displays on the downtown light posts. These memorial flags are purchased through prior year donations and the organization ensures that the flags are displayed at various appropriate times during the year in the downtown area. In 2014, the organization brought in the traveling vietnam memorial wall. The activity was centered around the fourth of july celebration. In addition, a project to construct and erect a permanent memorial park for the fallen was undertaken. In order to secure the permanent nature of the memorial, a donation of land was made by a local company and is disclosed in schedule b to this return. Donations were received in 2014 and the park was dedicated in 2015. Paving bricks, benches, and various memorial items were part of the activities in 2014 to make this memorial park a reality. The park memorials include area residents who were killed in action while serving in the military, as well as law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Grant activity was commenced for "safe routes to school" in 2014 and the results of this grant will be disclosed in 2015 and the improvements made thereon.
licking downtown continues to maintain the historic mill facility in an effort to revitalize downtown licking with various activities which include a fall festival with music and demonstrations. The mill building was transferred to this organization in 2009. The mill anchors downtown and is the largest tourist atraction in downtown licking. Repairs were undertaken to keep the building maintained in 2014.
licking downtown, inc. Puts together a calendar from pictures gathered from individuals of scenes from past years in the town. These calendars are available for sale and foster interest in the town. T shirt sales are also part of the fund raising for the organization. In the current year, t shirt sales and fundraising was more due to the activity brought into town for the traveling vietnam wall.
