Causes: Education
Mission: The library foundation enhances our library's leadership, innovation and reach, helping multnomah county library address emerging community needs, and sustain a strong library system. Gifts, large and small, from individuals, foundations and businesses make this work possible.
Programs: Early literacy programs reached 68,000 babies, young children and parents, especially those most vulnerable to low literacy. Targeting families with limited resources and reading ability during a crucial window for early brain development, these programs help parents become the first, best, and most permanent teachers of their children. The new parent program reached 10,000 new parents and babies in hospitals, encouraging parents to read with their newborns and visit the library. Every child a reader reached 32,000 young children and parents with a program that sends books home weekly, educates parents and motivates families to read together at home. In a partnership with wic, 8,000 moms were educated about early brain development and reading. The earl boyles library pilot project brought books and librarians to 1,600.
school-age literacy programs reach into 7 of the county's 8 school districts and out into the community, engaging more than 127,000 children in activities that cement reading skills and academic success. Three primary investments: books 2 u brought inspiring "booktalkers" and take-home books to over 27,000 students in low performing public schools. Summer reading reached more than 110,000 children, including 96% of elementary school students in the county. Everybody reads reached 2,200 students by bringing books, curriculum and discussion groups to 18 high schools and youth organizations, transforming how students experience reading, writing and the significance of the written word.
an array of lifelong learning programs, workshops and events at library branches and outreach centers reach people of all ages. Children and adults accessed free arts, cultural, and humanities programs at branches across the system. Seniors and adults participated in the everybody reads community wide reading program, including lectures and book discussion groups. An innovative new service helped library patrons access specially-trained readers advisory librarians. Last year, more than 25,000 people were reached with these programs.
other program services include staff time and program services for library programs, communications and activities ($534,933); and other library funding, including the expansion of library collections, acquisition of rare books and historic materials, library staff development, and the library's mobile app. ($380,740).
