Programs: Legal aid of western michigan provided direct legal assistance to 6,400 low income persons and seniors living in its 17 county service area. Over 1,300 persons were provided with extended service - representation in court and with administrative agencies - while over 5,000 were provided with advice or brief service from local offices or the call hotline. In addition, nearly 20,000 persons benefited from lawm activities with over 1,600 attending community education events or clinics and workshops, an additional 2,000 receiving help through help desks at the courthouse or an internet-based "ask a lawyer" project; and another 3,200 were referred to other sources of legal assistance or other help. We are proud to report the 2017 pro bono campaign raised over $268,000 in financial contributions. This does not include donations made by private attorneys directly to lawm through the united way ($13,500), nor does it include costs waived by firms/individuals on pro bono files they handled ($8,900). Total financial contributions including all of the above were $290,400. In addition, pro bono attorneys closed 210 cases during 2017. The number of hours donated on those files was 3,771 and were valued at $1,102,735. This is the ninth consecutive year in which the dollar value of services provided by the private bar exceeded the $1,000,000 mark. Total contributions of time and money donated by the private bar were $1,393,235.
