Causes: Homeless & Housing, Homeless Shelters
Mission: Leavenworth interfaith community of hope is a non-profit corporation which provides services to leavenworth/lansing area residents. The community of hope connects clients with services they need while creating a safe place of belonging for everyone. Services are not need- based and are available to anyone. The community of hope is comprised of welcome central and the shelter of hope. In late 2016, a facility acquisition team recommended new construction to combine welcome central, the shelter of hope, and a new day center. A capital campaign and construction for a 6,000 sq. Ft. Building occurred in 2017, to be opened in 2018.
Programs: Welcome central is the heart of the community of hope. Its programs provide clients with the help they need to access direct services provided by other agencies. In addition, welcome central fills the gap in services by providing free transportation, showers, limited storage for homeless individuals, and assistance obtaining personal identification documents. Welcome central serves as the agency of last resort and provides funds for services not available elsewhere. All services are provided by volunteers. Welcome central served over 800 individuals during 2017, of which over 50% reported monthly household income of 500 or less. Welcome central also provided 2,503 trips resulting in 32,390 miles driven in the leavenworth/lansing area. Transportation provided was to medical offices and hospitals, grocery stores and food banks, other agencies, and the veteran's administration complex. The community of hope administers a landlord/tenant contract with the city of leavenworth through welcome central. The community provides tenant counseling, tenant complaint verification, and attempts to mediate tenant/landlord disagreements.
the shelter of hope is an overnight facility which provides a safe place to sleep from 9:00 pm to 7:00 am every night. It is staffed by three part- time paid staff positions and 70 vounteers each week. Volunteers work in three-hour shifts to ensure the safety and comfort of overnight guests. The shelter provided for 228 unduplicated guest stays during 2017. Although more than half of these stays were for 10 nights or less, there was an upward trend in the number of guests staying more than 10 nights.
