Causes: Philanthropy, Voluntarism Promotion
Mission: Bringing reading to lives - the stanislaus literacy center, a non-profit corporation in partnership with the community - business, education and government - teaches adults and their families basic education skills - helps parents become their child's first and best teacher and prepares a more productive workforce.
Programs: Family literacy - adults who need to improve their english have an opportunity to learn in one of seven classes offered in the community. A total of 224 adults were tutored in english with the following results: 140 read a book or newspaper, 15 filled out a job application, 14 got a driver's license, 66 learned the alphabet, 33 increased involvement in children's literacy and 28 shared a book with a child.
high school equivalency preparation - adults who need a diploma and want to pass a test for their high school equivalency (also known as a ged) are prepared through classroom and online instruction. There are eight locations where classes are offered including a class taught in spanish. Classes are also taught at the county jail. Results from this program include: 745 were tutored, 165 attained their ged, 86 enrolled in college or vocational education, and 31 got a job.
literacy program - adult literacy is offered by volunteers who provide individual tutoring for adults 3-4 hours per week in a public place. This program is offered in partnership with the stanislaus county library with its main office in the modesto library. Adult literacy students are adults who read at or below a 7th grade level. There were 149 adults given instruction by 104 volunteers who were recruited and trained by learningquest staff. Results for these adults include the following: 29 learned the alphabet, 30 read a book or newspaper, 8 wrote a letter, 7 shared a book with a child, 5 helped their children with homework and 34 found a job or a better job.
