Mission: Advance the quality of education in math, science, technology and related disciplines.
Programs: Cooperated with sinclair community college in a 10-day stem institute (june 9-20) at middletown high school, serving 45 secondary teachers from southwest ohio who developed hands-on/minds-on instructional units which reached well over a thousand students. The math machine's component of the institute focused on "color functions" software which we made available to all participants. 8 teachers chose to do additional work with math machines and received equipment for their classrooms.
conducted a 6-day workshop in dayton, ohio (aug. 4-8 and nov. 15, 2014). Each of the 9 participants received and learned to use 4 math machines (rgb color mixer, rc controller, function plane and laci smart cart). These math machines can all be controlled with either a windows computer or a ti-84 family calculator and can be reused indefinitely in the participants' classrooms.
continued development and distribution of free software, curriculum materials and instructions for building low-cost classroom apparatus for stem teachers. Software developments included the addition of partial mac support and enhancements to pc software. The primary new hardware is the laci smart cart, a classroom-appropriate vehicle which moves in response to virtually any algebraic function, x = f(t) or v=f(t). Free software and building instructions are on our website. Dissemination also included presentations at 3 nctm regional conferences and 1 ohio conference where software and curriculum materials were distributed to over 100 educators.
