Causes: Adult Education, Education, Literacy, Remedial Reading & Encouragement
Mission: To teach and encourage adults who struggle with literacy, help families discover the joy of learning so all children start kindergarten ready to read, create hope for brighter futures and build a stronger, more self-sufficient and engaged community for all of us.
Programs: The family literacy program incorporates all four components recommended by the national center for families learning: adult education, early childhood education, parent time, and parent and child together time. While parents improve their literacy skills in the adult classroom, their children participate in high-quality developmentally appropriate activities. Children ages birth to three are in the infant/toddler classroom where the focus is on sensory exploration to stimulate brain development. Children ages three to six are in the preschool classroom where play and learning activities encourage social, emotional and intellectual development to prepare them for kindergarten.
the adult basic skills (abs) program is designed specifically for students to improve their reading, writing, mathematics, spelling and grammar skills. When a student enrolls, each is tested to determine academic needs and goals. A course of study is individualized for him/her. Goals may range from improved reading levels to completion of ged studies. The curriculum is based on interactive computer programs and teacher-facilitated one-on-one and small group instruction with trained volunteer tutors providing the individual attention crucial for student success. Student income is verified and fees are determined on a sliding scale based on federal poverty guidelines. Students pay fees ranging from $10 to $40/month. No one is turned away because they cannot pay. Full scholarships are available based on need.
english-language (ell) instruction is offered to adults whose native language is other than english so they may become self-sufficient members of our community. Students learn conversation, vocabulary and pronunciation in addition to the instructions offered in adult basic skills. Learning lab helps these students adjust to the cultural and societal differences they encounter in america. Student fees are charged using the same guidelines as the abs program.
