Mission: The mission of the lakes area humane society is to promote responsible care and training for household pets through education and public awareness, and to provide a safe and shelter haven for lost and abandoned animals pending placement in suitable permanent homes.
Programs: During 2014, the organization provided shelter to 1,159 animals and reunited 82 lost pets with their owners. Placed 479 pets in new, permanent homes. Each of these animals was tested for serious diseases, vaccinated and spayed/neutered before being adopted. Offered animal behavior counseling at no charge to individuals struggling with negative pet behaviors. In addition, over 75 dogs and puppies were trained through this program. Shelter staff provided 41 tours and presentations to children's groups. Over 123 children learned about the importance of being kind to animals, animal safety, and responsible pet ownership and about the shelter's many services.
community spay project: lahs offered a special low-cost/free spay program for douglas county residents, which allowed pet owners who are unable to shoulder the costs of altering their pets through a mobile spay clinic hosted at the shelter that in 2014, was able to alter over 170 for pet owners. Since the program's inception in 2006, a nearly 3500 animals have been spayed preventing hundreds of unwanted kittens and puppies from being born.
special medical fund: over 93 animals were offered assistance to cover medical costs incurred when their pet required emergency medical care. These pet owners would have had to either surrender or euthanize their pets without this assistance, as they would have been unable to shoulder the costs of the necessary veterinary care on their own.
