Its mission is to promote mutual understanding among 11- to 17-year-olds of diverse backgrounds and support their development into world citizens with strong inner grounding. Since 2008, kidspirit's unique process has empowered teens through creative expression and youth-led collaboration to raise their voices about questions that go to the heart of life. The organization is led by an all-youth network of editors around the world who edit submissions collaboratively, decide on the magazines quarterly themes, set the editorial agenda, and discuss ethical, philosophical, and spiritual topics. Ad-free and unaffiliated, kidspirit provides a critical outlet for teenagers everywhere to discover and highlight the essential humanity transcending divergent points of view. Programs: Kidspirit celebrated its tenth year in print in 2017, and its network of young editors has grown to include 60 teenagers on 9 editorial boards in new york, australia, china, ghana, massachusetts, india, new zealand, and pakistan. To celebrate its tenth anniversary, kidspirit held a benefit dinner in new york city honoring patrick gaston, president and ceo of gaston consulting, and laura walker, president and ceo of new york public radio. Members of the kidspirit community from india, pakistan, and new zealand attended and participated in the event. That evening kidspirit also launched the alumni advisory council, a group of kidspirit alumni editors that will strengthen the community through their continued guidance and support. In conjunction with the celebration, kidspirit released a retrospective anthology, ten years of kidspirit, featuring some of the most inspirational articles, poetry, and artwork published in its magazine over the past decade. Prior to its public release, the anthology was recognized with a wilbur award for youth books from the rcc, and received critical acclaim from various authors and institutions, including the school library journal, spirituality & practice, and pulitzer prize winning novelist jennifer egan. This year, kidspirit received a grant from the collegiate church corporation for operating support as well as to continue expanding its satellite ed boards in pakistan. The initiative in pakistan is growing due to kidspirits partnership with intersections international, a multi-cultural, multi-faith, global initiative committed to forging justice, reconciliation, and peace. The organization also added two new initiatives to its programming this year: kidspirit shorts, which gives kids across the planet a chance to share their voices through video; and online poetry and editing workshops, which empower young people on different ed boards to collaborate over video chat. Over 20 contributors were selected by their peers on editorial boards to receive 2017 kidspirit awards. Winners were eligible to apply for micro-grants to celebrate the accomplishment in their communities. Each party was an opportunity for award recipients to share their writing and artwork with family and friends. To further highlight the work of its young contributors, kidspirit articles and artwork are syndicated on the huffington post and on a spirituality & practice blog called kidspirit youth voices.
