Causes: Art Museums, Arts & Culture
Mission: The Katonah Museum of Art, through innovative exhibition and education programs, promotes the understanding and enjoyment of the visual arts for diverse audiences. The Museum presents exhibitions that explore ideas about art, culture and society past and present.
Programs: The Katonah Museum of Art (KMA), located an hour north of New York City in Katonah, NY, was founded as the Katonah Gallery in 1954, a non-collecting, volunteer-run institution with a special emphasis on education. In 1990, the Katonah Gallery became the KMA and moved to a new building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes. This elegant 10,000-square-foot facility provides space for more comprehensive exhibitions, a wider range of participatory art education activities, and a greater variety and frequency of public programs. A dedicated family Learning Center was created in 1997 and remains the only “always open” art learning facility in northern Westchester County. The KMA currently serves over 25,000 people a year who primarily come from New York’s Westchester County as well as Connecticut’s Fairfield County. Almost 90% of Museum admissions are discounted, underlining the Museum’s commitment to engage the widest range of audiences in art-centric encounters. Via its cornerstone outreach program, ArteJuntos/ArtTogether, the Museum has pioneered using art as a means to foster a sense of community and belonging among Hispanic and Latino immigrant families (a population which has been increasing dramatically in the Westchester region since the early 2000s), engaging close to 1,000 area individuals with art and art-making both at the Museum and in community classrooms.
