Causes: Women, Womens Service Clubs
Mission: We are an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. We reach out to women of all races, religions and national origins who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism.
Programs: The junior league of las vegas (jllv) has been serving the las vegas community for over 70 years. In those years, numerous non-profit organizations were founded through community service and fundraising efforts by the hard-working members of jllv. With over 470 members, jllv is dedicated to improving clark county and training members to become effective volunteers and leaders within the community. Junior league projects meet a variety of community needs. The annual holiday bear project is the oldest on-going project of the organization. Since 1987, the sustaining members coordinate a holiday gift drive for approximately 350 children from at-risk schools. Done in a day projects provide a hands-on volunteer experience for immediate change to the community. Selected projects are chosen to allow camaraderie and immediate satisfaction with league members and address the focus area of health and wellness. Junior leagues' kids in the kitchen is an association-wide initiative of the association of junior leagues international (ajli) that helps address the urgent issues surrounding childhood obesity and poor nutrition. Community grants provide both much needed funding for community needs that fall outside the definition of a project and permit jllv to strengthen an existing or past project or advocacy effort. Education grants provide funding to clark county educators enabling them to develop and implement educational enrichment projects in the classroom. The jllv headquarters, the morelli house, was originally located on the desert inn country club estates, now the wynn resort. Jllv moved and restored the house as a historical preservation project and to serve as the league's headquarters. The public program showcases the historic mid century house through pre-arranged group tours, public open houses, and educational programs. Jllv collaborated with the vegas roots community garden to promote community awareness of sustainable agriculture, promote community health and fitness through the development of a premier community garden, provide a variety of volunteer opportunities, and offer a highly-visible project in coordination with other community leaders. Jllv's care fair project arranges one day health fairs providing no cost medical examinations, immunizations, and care to underserved members of the community through partnership with boys and girls club of las vegas and the southern nevada immunization and health coalition.
