Causes: Children & Youth, Youth Development Programs
Mission: The mission of JDJ is to nurture children for a lifetime of giving and service to the world; and to support families and others affected by children with life threatening illness and/or Autism. We accomplish this through the two wings of JDJ: 1) The Wilson Sisters Education & Training Academy and 2) Peppermint Promises. It is through these two wings that we foster a spirit of service and purpose within young people by teaching them the ethic and mechanics of philanthropy and the value of creating and sustaining philanthropic organizations; and model the value of philanthropy by providing direct grants to families with children with life threatening illness and/or Autism.
Results: Since launching in 2013, JDJ WSETA has raised and distributed funds for Habitat for Humanity (to combat youth homelessness), Kids Fitness (to address obesity among youth), childhood cancer awareness, and to scholarship fund organizations to annually financial assist students pursuing higher education, several who have graduated and are excelling in their respective fields; has distributed 54 Barnes & Noble gift cards (^ per year), increasing the reading production of kids in the community by 25% and an additional 15 minutes per day; and empowered girls whose grades are being positively impacted by the immersive experience through the eight dimensions of wellness in Portal 2 Powers. Through JDJ Peppermint Promises, families have been gifted with scooters, crash pads and trampolines for kids with Autism, to help with OT, PT, address anxiety attacks, and tamping down on sensory overload which has resulted in an increase in focus, less distractions and reduced impulsiveness; created fun-filled adventures for families such as ice skating, bowling, pizza parties and game days and movie afternoons resulting in the fostering of social skills, increase in communication skills, and establishing ties that bind; and on an annual basis, organize, fundraise and sponsor annual community events leading to an increase in support, reduction in isolation and building a special community among families who are overwhelmed at times by the constant demands of caregiving.
