Causes: Environment, Forest Conservation
Mission: By connecting people with nature, bernheim improves quality of life, the understanding of ecological issues and the economic and social values of nature.
Programs: The isaac w. Bernheim foundation protects and manages over 14,300 acres of forests, lakes, fields and arboretum landscapes. The bernheim foundation uses these resources to explore our deep connections with nature through educational programming and events, scientifically curated plant collections, arts in nature, hiking trails and examples of sustainable buildings and landscapes which are enjoyed by over 200,000 visitors annually. The bernheim foundation team touches communities throughout the region with educational programs and school field trips, cooperative research on conservation and ecological issues, the management of living roofs to help reduce the heating of cities, and by participating in numerous region-wide efforts including "children at play initiatives" and the establishment of wildlife corridors. Bernheim acts as a leader in ecological stewardship by using best practices to manage our land including prescribed burns, invasive species control and the restoration of important habitats. Additionally, numerous universities and colleges from across the nation conduct ecological research at bernheim, or benefit from the research conducted by our staff. Bernheim also trains the next generation of natural areas managers, ecologists, horticulturalists and outdoor educators through our internship programs.
