Causes: International
Mission: The iowa city foreign relations council seeks to promote understanding of world politics and international issues by sponsoring weekly noon luncheon forums on various aspects of international relations. Experts are invited to speak on foreign policy, international relations, law, arts, the environment, politics, diplomacy and current events.
Programs: The organization hosted 34 noon luncheon programs this year. Each was attended by 54 to 123 people from the community and the university of iowa. Total attendance for the year was 2,921, an increase of 38 percent. Each program also was videotaped for airing on the city cable channel and for the digital archives at the university of iowa main library. Forum topics included china's emerging influence in africa, chinese political culture, everyday corruption in russia and ukraine, human face of the middle east refugee crisis, german iowa and the global midwest, u. S. Relations with kosovo, global health and sustainable development, myths about immigration, the sad state of turkish democracy, the evolving global commercial aircraft inndustry, gaza, the election of 2016, samurai spirit in modern japan, jordan's people and culture, women's health and the environment, culinary nationalism, the international order and exploring the world. Many speaker were university of iowa faculty or staff. Other speakers came from keio university in japan, tufts university, harvard university, the stanley foundation, republic of kosovo, un foundation's global health diplomacy, the us foreign service and columbia university and vanity fair.
