Mission: To influence, encourage, and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.
Results: For more than 60 years, IUCN has been working for a just world that values and conserves nature. We have brought endangered plants and animals back from the brink; improved water quality; restored forests, farmlands and fish stocks; and helped reduce carbon emissions. IUCN has helped create national parks and World Heritage sites everywhere. Today, 13% of the Earth’s land surface is protected. IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species is the world’s regular health check for plants and animals. More than 55,000 species have already been assessed. Thanks to IUCN’s work, nature is coming back to life. But we need to do much more – and your support is vital.
Target demographics: IUCN is a unique union of more than 1,200 State and NGO member organisations in some 160 countries and almost 11,000 expert volunteers.
Geographic areas served: IUCN is a global organisation with 45 offices worldwide.
Programs: Conserving biodiversity is central to the mission of IUCN. We demonstrate how biodiversity is fundamental to addressing some of the world’s greatest challenges: tackling climate change, achieving sustainable energy, improving human well-being and building a green economy. - Business and Biodiversity - Economics - Ecosystem Management Programme - Environmental Law Programme - Forest Programme - Gender - Global Policy - Marine and Polar Programme - Protected Areas Programme - Science and Learning - Social Policy - Species Programme - TRAFFIC (wildlife trade) - Water Programme - World Heritage Programme
