Mission: Promote excellence in research on all aspects of human lactation including the composition of human milk and the effects of human milk/breastfeeding upon the infant or the mother. Disseminate information on current research in the field. Organize international meetings on appropriate topics at timely intervals. Establish and maintain liaison with other organizations or groups that share mutual interests including but not limited to other academic/research societies, relevant governmental agencies, and public health auhorities. Aid other organizations in their educational efforts concerning topics of mutual interest. Foster the development of and recognize outstanding scientists in the field of human milk and lactation. Recognize members who have made outstanding contribution to the objectives of the society. Support young investigators' research and training via the trainee expansion program.
Programs: Grantmaking; the international society for research in human milk and lactation (isrhml) initiated, with the financial assistance of the family larsson-rosenquist foundation, the "trainee expansion program (tep). " the tep funds research focused on enhancing the training and experience of young investigators in the field of human milk and lactation. Receipients must be isrhml trainees in good standing and must compete for the grants via a designated application process. In its inaugural year (2016) the tep funded 4 projects - 1 in the united states and 3 outside the united states.
the international society for research in human milk and lactation organizes and administers a biennial scientific conference related to human milk and lactation research. These meetings usually span four days, during which internationally recognized subject experts give talks and lead workshops related to cutting-edge lactation-related research. All interested parties (members and nonmembers) are invited to attend and participate, and students are encouraged to present their latest research results. Approximately 150-250 scientists and clinicians typically attend. To date, there have been 17 such conferences with the most recent occuring in stellenbosch, south africa (2016) and the next currently being planned for japan in october, 2018.
