Mission: In 1996, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) implemented the Students Plus after school Program with the hopes of aiding the often-difficult refugee youth experience. In addition to the obvious academic challenges refugees teens face, they also face a myriad of social and cultural challenges. At school they are thrust into an environment of racial tension, rigorous academic expectations, and a disconnection from teachers, staff, and administration. Local community organizations, schools, and community members have long been concerned that without support, students encountering these challenges are prone to disengage themselves from school and isolate themselves from positive community interactions. Students Plus is a voluntary, year-round after-school program designed to support refugee youth during the critical period of adjustment to life in the United States. The program provides academic assistance, informal mentoring, and an assortment of extracurricular activities. Perhaps even more importantly, students make meaningful connections with their peers, mentors, and teachers and realize their potential as contributing members of the community. The mission of Students Plus is to provide refugee students with life skills, increase academic success, encourage and nurture community involvement amongst students and parents, and successfully advocate the needs of refugee students on campus.
