Mission: Iri advances freedom and democracy worldwide by developing political parties, civic institutions, open elections, democratic governance and the rule of law.
Programs: Libya: iri's work in libya focuses on three core areas: municipal governance, community peacebuilding, and women and youth. At the municipal level, iri works to build capacity on both the supply and demand side of governance, working with officials to help them understand and meet the needs of their citizens, and with civil society organizations (csos) to help citizens become more engaged in the political process and advocate for their priorities. To promote sustainable peace, iri works to develop the potential of localized conflict resolution and peacebuilding through inclusive dialogue and support to csos. Lastly, iri's programming works to ensure that the traditionally marginalized voices of women and youth are incorporated into all parts of the political process. Iri develops the skills of women and youth to become more active in libya's political life and supports public awareness campaigns to improve the perception of women's political participation.
ukraine: iri is at the forefront of working at the regional level to strengthen multi-party political systems, enhance civil society and promote democratic governance in ukraine. Through its extensive local governance programming, iri works to bridge the gap between citizens and elected officials throughout the country and increase citizen participation in the decision-making process. Starting in 2015, iri conducted the first-ever nation-wide municipal public opinion survey. The annual survey is then shared at a mayor's round table and a democratic governance conference in kyiv where mayors and their staff work together with governance experts, members of parliament and other ukrainian and international stakeholders to share best practices and improve existing governance mechanisms. In recent years, iri has been expanding its program to foster cooperation and unity between east and west ukraine. Through study tours, where local officials and youth have an opportunity to interact on a personal level with their counterparts from different parts of the country, iri is strengthening interregional relationships between reform-minded officials and young activists. Using polling data, iri works with political parties to include citizen needs and concerns in their decision-making processes.
jordan: the international republican institute's (iri) program in jordan has focused on connecting citizens and government by promoting democratic governance and strong political parties. Iri grassroots-focused activities encourage democratic participation on the national and local levels by engaging civil society, particularly women and youth, and preparing political parties and candidates for elections. Through its democratic governance programs, iri helps local civil society groups connect with their elected officials, involving them in decision-making processes and encouraging government bodies to be more responsive and accountable to constituencies. Program activities include civil society advocacy workshops, citizen sponsored issue forums, mayors' roundtable discussions, and workshops for mayors and their staff on constituent relations and communications. Iri's empower initiative provides civic education and leadership skills to women in "poverty pockets," government-designated villages that fall below set socio-economic thresholds, to increase their participation in elections and governance in their communities. Iri also offers workshops to political parties and candidates to strengthen their skills and prepare them for elections. Iri workshops help parties and candidates develop more effective platforms, campaigns, political messages and internal communications plans. Iri's work is informed and supported by regular public opinion research at the national and municipal level, which focuses government officials, key decision-makers and political parties on the issues that matter most to the jordanian public.
