Mission: The international life sciences institute (ilsi) is a nonprofit, worldwide foundation that seeks to improve the well-being of the general public through the advancement of science. Its goal is to further the understanding of scientific issues relating to nutrition, food safety, toxicology, risk assessment, and the environment by bringing together scientists from academia, government and industry.
Results: In 2020, ILSI hosted two webinars on the role of nutrition in supporting immune systems, as well as responses to viral infections. The ILSI Federation had many other varied accomplishments in 2020. For example: • ILSI was comprised of 14 entities worldwide. • ILSI hosted 173 workshops, symposia and scientific sessions. • ILSI published 38 scientific articles. • ILSI engaged thousands of stakeholders across the public and private sectors, as well as academia. • ILSI's science videos on YouTube garnered 65,000 views. To further its support of students in nutrition and food science, as well as early-career scientists, ILSI published the 11th edition of the accessible, comprehensive resource, Present Knowledge in Nutrition. This textbook provides current, reliable and sourced information on a variety of important topics, from basic nutrition and metabolism to the microbiome and the role of nutrition in cognition. Divided into two volumes for improved portability, ILSI’s textbook is a go-to resource for advanced undergraduate students, as well as graduate and postgraduate students. Even experienced, seasoned nutrition experts find Present Knowledge in Nutrition a helpful resource to have on their bookshelves.
Target demographics: All ILSI scientific activities have a primary public purpose and benefit. ILSI does not lobby, conduct lobbying activities, or make policy recommendations. ILSI believes scientists from industry, government, and academia and other sectors of society can and should work together to identify and address topics of common interest. Scientists from geographically diverse regions of the world can best address complex science and health issues by sharing their unique skills, insights, and perspectives.
Geographic areas served: ILSI is a nonprofit, worldwide organization whose mission is to provide science that improves human health and well-being and safeguards the environment.
Programs: The One ILSI philosophy encourages ILSI entities to work together to identify and resolve outstanding scientific questions in four thematic areas that capture the core of ILSI’s work: food and water safety; toxicology and risk assessment; nutrition and health; and agricultural sustainability and nutrition security. The ILSI network is committed to improving scientific knowledge in these four areas, and the One ILSI strategy demonstrates how our impact reaches across the globe. All ILSI's activities are conducted in an open and transparent manner and all scientific outcomes are made available to the public to ensure confidence in the integrity of the scientific process. The purpose and funding sources for all ILSI sponsored meetings; symposia; conferences; seminars; and workshops are fully disclosed. All publications list funding sources and sponsors. Speakers and authors sign disclosures of financial and other interests related to the contents of their presentations and/or articles.
