Programs: Gumcha4health project:this project was conceived to promote long-term funding for the current and future programs in rural india, creating a meaningful increase in income for local artisans who were also subsistence farmers in our service area, and raise awareness for self-sufficient, self-sustaining community-based health programs. In this fiscal year, placement of gumchas were made in more than 40 independent american retail outlets - establishing enthusiastic partnerships with owners of long-established shops - in seven states: california, oregon, washington, maryland, virginia, north carolina and florida. The grandmother's health project was conceived in collaboration with our long-term partners in rural india, rampurhat railpar rural and urban health training society. The program was developed over a 6 month period during this fiscal year, culminating in a grant from the rapidan foundation to begin the initial steps of organizing and planning. The project takes an innovative approach to the introduction, implementation and follow-up for health program intervention at the rural village level. The project utilizes experienced village health workers living in the target villages and already trained by the project partners during one year or 18 month training programs. The focus population is grandmothers -- women between the ages of 40 and 60 - who are the primary opinion leaders and the community members with the widest set of responsibilities, largest social network, and greatest influence.
