Mission: On an annual basis, provide additional funding support to "promising young surgical investigators" within the department of surgery at the university of minnesota; regions hospital, st. Paul, mn;the va medical center, minneapolis, mn; and other outstanding academic surgical training programs throughout north america.
Programs: The programmatic service accomplishments for fiscal year 2016-2017 include providing additional funding support, resources, training and infrastructure to promote, sponsor, and facilitate basic and applied research in 21 surgical sub-specialty areas at nationally recognized academic surgical training programs (astp):the bariatric and metabolism surgery research center, under the direction of dr. Henry buchwald, is the research tail of the internationally recognized posch study. The posch study of more than $100,000,000. 00 is the largest research grant ever given by the national institutes of health (nih). For the first time, obese patients around the world were able to significantly reduce their morbidity and mortality secondary to hypercholesterolemia. Continuing again this year, and in cooperation with the national football league players association (nfl/pa), the living heart foundation (lhf), [a non-profit medical research foundation], and athletes health (ah), [a for-profit medical sports consortium], continued their 14-year medical screening program providing quarterly screening and follow-up care to members of the nfl former players. The national football league/players association is instrumental identifying players in medical need, directing them to quarterly screening clinics conducted throughout the united states, and subsidizing their care under the direction of the living heart foundation. In september, 2016, ibars, in cooperation with the nfl/pa and the living heart foundation (lhf) conducted a national symposium in minneapolis, minnesota gathering former nfl players, current nfl players, their families, representatives of the nfl, representatives of the minnesota vikings, the metropolitan sports authority, the university ofminnesota men's football team, and members of the scientific and medical community focusing attention on traumatic brain injury (tbi); the result of unrecognized and undertreated cerebral concussion which continues to plague the ranks ofthe nfl. The plastic and reconstructive surgery program under the direction of dr. Umar chaudry offers a three-year surgical fellowship training experience in plastic and reconstructive surgery highlighting specialty surgical microvascular repair in limb, organ, facial reconstruction, and organ transplantation. The plastic surgery research center training program works at the national level focusing on aesthetic and plastic and reconstructive surgery to enhance the quality of life for patients following neonatal, congenital defect, incident or accident, or cancer surgery reconstructive procedures. In the frrst year following the retirement of bruce l. Cunningham, md, recently retired division head, the bruce l. Cunninham, md retirement fund supported two plastic and reconstructive surgery fellows with the resources and time to travel to national meetings, present their fmdings, and assume important leadership positions within the american society of plastic surgeons (asps). With the recent graduation ofdr. Jennifer cameron, dr. Cameron has taken a major leadership position in coordination with dr. Brian kobenia to seek additional funds in support of the residents training experience outside the research laboratory. Dr. Cameron will attempt to address, in a substantive way, the changing work environment including scheduling, hospital-based meals, and other amenities such as medical dictation, transcription, and electronic medical record keeping to enhance the residents' experience. The metabolism surgery research center, under the direction of dr. Roderick barke, continues to offer outstanding metabolism and wound-healing research at the va medical center in minneapolis, minnesota. While no longer involved in the active pursuit of surgical treatment, dr. Barke, coordinating his efforts with dr. Steven santilli, now chairman at the department of surgery at the v. A. Medical center, continues to play an important role in basic research activities. Dr. Barke, continues to work in active cooperation with his colleague, dr. Linda carson, to further integrate the metabolism research program into the obstetrics and gynecological training program at the university of minnesota. The international humanitarian surgical team, under the direction of dr. Warren schubert and mrs. Naomi quillopa, rn, plan, finance, and implement life-saving medial missions to the philippines and the far east. Sadly, the theater of operation within central and south america simply became "too dangerous" to continue to put innocents at risk. The international humanitarian surgical team represents a critical component of the surgical training program in plastic and hand surgery at st. Paul regions hospital. Each year, more than 60 physicians and other para-professionals identify, address and resolve the medical and surgical needs of more than 1,500 indigenous patients performing significant, and in some case, life-saving facial reconstructive surgery. The najarian research center, under the direction of dr. John najarian, world-renown organ transplant surgeon, continues to showcase the talent of more than 50 years that his "legacy trainees" have led the nation and world transplant community in the field of solid organ transplantation. Dr. Najarian is widely recognized as the world leading trainer of organ transplant fellows whose numbers now exceed 215 from the university ofminnesota. With dr. Najarian's 90th birthday, and proposed board reorganization, the ibars board of directors extended an invitation to dr. Najarian's granddaughter, dr. Jessica najarian, to become the a member of the board of directors with the understanding that when she finishes her surgical pediatric residency training and returns to the twin cities, she will become the new chair of the board ofdirectors. This is all part of our 4-year continuous improvement succession plan which is part of our 5-year long-range plan to effect an atraumatic at both the senior leadership level board level and administrative level. Veterans offoreign wars and its ladies auxiliary center research center, under the direction of the board of directors, provides additional funding for the veterans of foreign wars and its ladies auxiliary surgical oncology research award at the university ofminnesota. Each year, the vfw and its ladies auxiliary surgical oncology research award is given to an outstanding young surgical investigator with an extraordinary capacity for outstanding contributions to the field of surgical oncology during the research laboratory portion of their training experience. In addition, and in a significant effort to expand the surgical resident training experience, in april, 2016 illars initiated a $180,000. 00 gift over a 3-year period to matched on a 2 to 1 basis by the department of surgery ($360,000. 00) to create a pool of $540,000. 00 in support of three surgical residents for a two-year fully paid experience in the surgical research laboratories. Recently ibars was approached by the department of surgery with an intriguing $750,00000 request in support ofthe analytics software infrastructure for the surgical resident training experience which is under current review by the ibars board. The st. Paul regions personnel travel fund, under the direction of dr. Martin lacey, provides ongoing operational support for surgical residents within the plastic and hand surgery training program at st. Paul regions hospital. Dr. Lacey, working in cooperation with the st. Paul's regions personnel travel fund, under the direction of dr. Warrant schubert, allows surgical fellows, surgical residents, medical students, and professional staff members to travel to national conferences in support of the division of plastic and hand surgery. The vascular surgery fellowship fund under the direction ofdr. Rumi faizer, continues to support the vascular surgery residency training program at the university of minnesota including opportunities for outstanding vascular surgery fellows to attend national and international conferences, coupled with expanded training opportunities for medical students, surgical residents, staff and faculty members. The william r. Kennedy, md neurologic research center, under the direction of dr. William r. Kennedy, is the logical outgrowth of the neurology program at the university of minnesota. Dr. Kennedy is recognized as the world's leading authority in the area of primary, peripheral neuropathy secondary to juvenile (type 1) and adult (type 2) diabetes. Dr. Kennedy and members of his research team are studying primary peripheral neuropathy to one day fmd a progressive treatment to ameliorate patient disease. The developmental fund for useful surgical st11dies witnessed a transition this year with the retirement ofdr. Herbert b. Ward and the installation ofdr.
