How I fell in love with ILH.
It all began in 1998, During this time I had the pleasure of enriching my love walk. My journey in life had me to meet Ms. Ruth Shortie, President and founder of Independent Living Housing. It started as a client relationship that made me admire her mission that she performed on the west side of Detroit. This woman was a mentor, councilor, social worker, life skills teacher all rolled up into one. The places that she serviced were Covenant House, Catholic Social Services, Cooley High, Cerveny Middle School, Winship and Rutherford Elementary &…
She provided parents and students tutoring, life skills, food, personal need products, goodie bags and love as was needed. She blessed those whom she came in contact with encouraging self esteem and being a friend. Ruth works tirelessly without a salary and continues to this day
Working with the learning disabled and those living below the poverty level. She remains a crusader striving to purchase an apartment building to house forty families or more. I believe that ILH services are needed for the Detroit and surrounding area. I vow to work with this organization until we as a community see the need for the importance of mental health awareness. I nominate Independent Living Housing for a spirit of excellence to strive forward into 2020 touching more lives than ever before.
