I had the pleasure of working with them over a weekend. Not only are they amazing people,, they are amazing at what they do!
The Humane Society of Louisiana has been a beacon of light and a voice for the voiceless for an uncounted number of neglected, abused, and needy animals. I have had the privilege of being involved with them for almost three decades and they give help and hope at the most difficult of times with steadfast love and concern for animals as well as for each of their members. Louisiana is a better place for the efforts of this group and the leadership their tireless founder, champion of the animals, Jeff Dorson.
For over thirty years, the humane Society Louisiana has been on the front line rescuing animals throughout the state of Louisiana..They don’t just stop with domesticated animals. They also help wildlife as well..They have dedicated their lives to helping abuse and neglected animals by giving them lots of love and compassion and finally finding them loving forever homes..I’m so proud of this nonprofit and proud to be a volunteer..
The Humane Society of Louisiana is awesome. Jeff Dorson leads a great team. They’ve helped me several times, supported any rescue efforts I’ve made and not only that but they try to get to the root of the problem and start working to resolve it. They’re constantly helping - constantly working on getting better laws in place for animals and he is diligent about it!
The Humane Society of Louisiana is the vanguard fighting for animal rights in Louisiana!
It is the driving force behind enacting laws for the welfare and protection of domestic animals AND, also, wildlife in Louisiana. It is the organization consistently and tirelessly lobbying the Louisiana Legislature for improving the quality of life for poor animals in impoverished shelters in areas of rural Louisiana where they are often housed in the extreme heat or cold with very little medical treatment, care, or comfort.
Also, for years, it has been the Humane Society of Louisiana and its founder, Jeff Dorson, leading the war against the horrible culture of dog fighting which is pervasive throughout Louisiana. Additionally, being a large and well established group for over 30 years, it has the power and prestige to effectuate countless rescues each year of dogs, cats, rabbits, ducks, exotic birds, and all of Louisiana's diverse wildlife- No life is left behind; every life is precious to the Humane Society of Louisiana. Additionally, it is one of the first groups with "boots on the ground" leading the charge in times of hurricanes and disasters and operates 2 sanctuaries. Also, it is this group which works hard to rescue some of the Mardi Gras horses in New Orleans many of whom it is believed end up being sold for slaughter after the good times of the parades are over.
Nevertheless, the animal neglect and abuse problem in Louisiana, a state where many of the people themselves are impoverished and in need of help, is overwhelming. Thus, there always is a need for more volunteers and more financial resources in order to make further progress in the day to day fight to change the culture of neglect, abuse, and pet overpopulation in Louisiana.
The Humane Society of Louisiana and its Executive Director Jeff Dorson are beyond amazing. He always goes out of his way to help every single person who contacts him, whether it's a cruelty case, a fundraiser for their own animal rescue, or to let him know about a heartwarming story about a cat or dog finally finding its forever home. They use their money wisely and are generous in helping other rescue groups who are in dire need of help. HSLA helps those rescues who are struggling to get noticed in rural areas, and they also help change state laws to protect animals. They are the best!
My name is Brittany Ware and I am the C.E.O. of Hayden's Hoofbeat Haven 501c3. I have worked a many of cruelty cases mainly focusing around livestock and I have to say Humane Society of Louisiana has done so much good for the impact of our state with cruelty and neglect. They go above and beyond the call of duty. If they can help they are at the front of the line. I am so appreciative to know that when it comes to the animals there is hope! I have seen so much progress in my parish along with many others. It makes my heart fill to the fullest that I know I am not alone with making a difference to the animals in this state. Thank you Humane Society of Louisiana for ALL that you do big and small... pics of a horse below that was neglected saved and got a second chance with the help of Humane Society of Louisiana and my program Hayden's Hoofbeat Haven
One of the best animal welfare organizations out there. The HLA is not one of the big, fancy animal rights organizations that throws lots of fancy parties for rich people. They are "in the trenches" rescuing animals and coordinating their transport to shelters and directly relieving suffering.
Animals are helped everyday by this organization. Long hours and committed people devoted to the animals care is something I have seen first hand.
My niece and I met and volunteered with this group through a fundraiser and they are not just some generic pet rescue. The lobbying they do for stronger animal welfare laws, to the veganism movement education, TNR programs, environmental protection, and so much more!
Wonderful organization! I'm thankful to have gotten to know many of the staff over the last couple of years. Great people doing great things!!!
These amazing people helped me this year, no questions asked, to save my 9 year old baby by covering the costs of his tumor removal surgery!
I am thankful everyday to see the work they do and I am proud to go out and help them with this important work for our world and all the lives in it whenever asked!
Wonderful people doing wonderful things for all the animals. So glad to be associated with this organization.
Have had nothing but wonderful experiences with the Humane Society of Louisiana. Such a wonderful group!! This is my favorite organization to work with!
My first involvement with Jeff Dorson & the HSLA was years ago when I contacted them in regards to a neglected dog. I was desperate to get the dog rescued & so grateful to this day that I came across Jeff & his team. He walked me through an owner surrender and ultimately into the compassionate hands of his team. I’ve been a following the organization for years and gladly donate at least monthly. I’m in complete awe of the unwavering dedication of this organization not just in their rescue efforts but their mission to educate and advocate for animals rights. Thanks to Jeff and his team for all that they do.
I first became aware of this nonprofit group in 2014. From then to now, I have followed their work and contributed to their efforts. HSLA is a great organization and I am very impressed by all that they accomplish.
I continue to be in awe of Jeff, his staff and volunteers. It seems that daily, they are taking on the care of numerous animals in distress. They fulfil a void left by local and state legislators who need to provide funding for the same kind of services now provided by HSLA. I know they are working on trying to get that in place. I have supported Jeff's group since 1988, and will continue to do so, even after I'm gone. HSLA is in my will!
The only effective animal cruelty investigation organization in the state. They follow the process until a case is complete and enlist the support of the community to make sure the proper actions are taken by all law enforcement entities involved.
Jeff oversees all of this and works tirelessly for the benefit of all animals, large and small.
He also works very hard to support and educate animal service departments across the state.
He has a tremendous team of volunteers that give their time and energy to protect and care for animals.
This is a boots on the ground, diligent, caring organization. So responsive to animals in need. True rescue warriors. They fight for the animals and work so hard to get better legislation to protect the animals of louisiana.
Jeff Dorson is tireless and beyond amazing.
I have had the honor to work with the board members of the Humane Society of Louisiana for over a decade now, and can tell you that there is not another group with a more caring and committed crew. The passion and dedication that these members have is as inspiring as it is effective in improving animal welfare throughout out state.

The Humane Society of Louisiana is outstanding. From the smallest to the largest undertakings, they work tirelessly to make the lives of animals in Louisiana better. I've known them since Hurricane Katrina where they've done an outstanding job.
They really care, and they really care about the animals of Louisiana especially. Kudos to them, and here's to many more years of excellent work.
I've been with this organization since its inception in 1988, and I know how hard they work to make a difference each and every day. They have started programs that are aimed at helping as many animals as possible, including investigating cruelty complaints, lobbying on the local, state, and federal levels, transporting animals to new homes, adopting animals to local residents, responding to natural and man-made disasters, and overseeing three animal care facilities.
I am a volunteer and Board Member with the Humane Society of Louisiana. I first became acquainted with them over 10 years ago. This organization is dedicated to animal welfare - Jeff Dorson became trained as a private detective in order to investigate cases of animal abuse. HSL manages 2 sanctuaries for animals, promotes animal welfare in underserved areas of the state of Louisiana, pet transports to get animals out of high kill shelters and on to better opportunities for adoption in other states, promotes spay/neuter for dogs and cats. HSL promotes veganism - a simple, easy way to help animals is to stop eating and wearing them.
Jeff Dorson and Dana Nesbitt are amazing people and they have dedicated the last 35 years of their lives to running this organization and I am a better person for just knowing them. They are kind, patient and tireless.
I've gone to many of their events and I have always felt welcome and appreciated. This is a worthwhile organization and I recommend checking it out.
The HSLA consists of the most caring, hard working, dedicated people in the world. I have adopted four dogs from them and they all are my little soul mates. My dogs and I THANK YOU SO MUCH for doing what you do!
I have had the pleasure to work with the team at the Humane Society of Louisiana for 35 years, and I am so proud to know this committed team of people. The crew is absolutely tireless, going far above and beyond the call of duty to help animals - after hours, in their spare time, and sometimes out of their own pockets, when funds are tight. From founder and Executive Director, Jeff Dorson, who can still often be found picking up the phone himself and working hands-on in the field, to Director of Animal Care and Transports, Jessica Cameron, who has never once complained about working around the clock during disasters and large cruelty cases, this team is absolutely first rate. I know firsthand the absolute heartbreak of working in the rural South, where resources are limited, in a region where poverty and a lack of education contribute to a variety of social ills, with pet overpopulation, animal cruelty and neglect being among them. In Louisiana, saving animals is hard work at the best of times, and the challenges this organization has faced, from losing a shelter in Hurricane Katrina, to enduring multiple hurricanes and disasters, would have caused less committed people to throw in the towel. Commitment to the cause and a deep and profound love of animals is simply at the core of everything this charity does, year in and year out. I am proud to work with all of these wonderful people for Louisiana's animals, and I urge others to support their lifesaving programs.
I initially began working with the Humane Society of Louisiana when I went out to Livingston Parish to volunteer during the 2016 floods. They were spearheading the rescue & relief efforts and I ended up spending a month out there on site working with them and have continued to volunteer ever since. They also operate sanctuaries, work on animal rights legislation for our state and too many other programs to list. This is a really wonderful group of people working hard to make a difference for animals in our state!
I can not fully explain all of the great, sometimes almost impossible, things they are doing for the neglected, abused, abandoned, and tortured animals in the entire state. Not only hands on rescues, but also fighting to change laws in every part of our state. Fighting to educate the importance of TNRV, spaying and neutering all animals, proper shelter in normal and extraordinary weather, trying to educate people on the importance of reporting any form of abuse to the local authorities and especially reporting any information of dog fighting. I am one of their boots on the ground volunteers so I can tell everyone that will listen how very well I know that every cent donated goes towards the animals. I have never reached out in a dire situation and been turned down for help. In turn I have never turned them down with any requests they have & I never will. Non-profits are suffering therefore animals are suffering more as well. If you were ever to place blind faith in any animal welfare organization, I can give you my word & make a solid promise that this one can do more good with a $10 donation than any other state wide organization can. They also collaborate efforts with other organizations, rescues, and shelters to save animals that otherwise could not be, whereas unfortunately I've experienced egos turning down help and animals dying because of it. I thank God every single day for Jeff & his staff. They are the warriors fighting 24/7 for these helpless animals.
If you can pass up your designer coffee or one night of take-out and instead donate that money, you can sleep soundly knowing that your doing your part to help in this fight. It is an uphill battle that most will never see the gruesome side of. They do it every day so you don't have to and no matter how hard it gets, they never stop. Never. They are donation based and it absolutely takes a village so become part of theirs and keep the good fight going!
The HUMANE SOCIETY OF LOUISIANA IS A BLESSING TO THE ENTIRE STATE OF LOUISIANA! I have called them with EMERGENCIES, when no one else would help.Within minutes I'm able to get the stray dog thats lying in the road, hit by a car, to the VET FOR TREATMENT!
They are an AMAZING GROUP OF VOLUNTEERS, working 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day.
They are now helping LAPAW RESCUE put together a plan to help hundreds of cats, the City of Dequincy La wants to fine for feeding the strays., with ways to control the overpopulation.

I've followed Jeff and his team for many years on Facebook and they have never ceased to amaze me how involved they are and how far they will go to protect all living creatures. They are one of the few organizations that I have felt compelled to donate what little money I have had at the time to help support.
However... it really wasn't until recently, after volunteering to help them in their efforts that I could fully comprehend and appreciate the work that Jeff and his team do; literally 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; fielding calls and addressing all the cruelty animals are faced with in this world. Despite the challenges, setbacks and in some cases resistance; this organization manages to retain a positive outlook moving forward and a friendly demeanor.
They are quick to thank and compliment the efforts of others whom act with good intentions however really it should be them that is thanked and appreciated for all that they do.
I helped with animal rescue after Katrina and have stayed in touch. HSLA is wonderful, especially in their dogged efforts (pun intended) to keep animals safe and to help worthy animal companions. Director Jeff Dorson is always very quickly responsive, and his efforts are wide-ranging. I contribute regularly, and I will continue to do so.
An amazing network of animal lovers that fight for the health and happiness of all animals. From board members to on the street investigators, I've never seen a more dedicated group of people. They aren't shy about fighting for jail time for offenders, and monitor current court cases to ensure maximum penalties are given. All in all a wonderful group of people.
An amazing organization who works tirelessly for the animals of Louisiana. Their dedication goes above and beyond and donations go directly to the animals in need. Keep up the good fight!
This organization has been helping animals that are victims of severe neglect and abuse for 30 years on a shoestring budget. Animal victims of abuse are often euthanized when taken in by a kill shelter because the staff and medical care are just not available to save them. Humane Society of Louisiana steps in and allows for truly happy endings for abused animals in parishes across Louisiana by paying for medical treatment and providing foster care. Another thing they do that I love is write laws that allow for the prosecution of animals abusers and a good portion if not most of the Louisiana animal cruelty laws were written and brought to enforcement by this agency. In addition, they also help average citizens unite in different parishes to set up humane and well run shelters as well as monitor less than ethical shelters that are already in existence. I honestly don’t know how they keep up with these many roles but know that Louisiana is a better place because of them
I was gunned down in New Orleans East, five rounds. Chest, stomach, arm, hand, and last a temple shot to the head. I stood up each time. A pure act of divine intervention. During my divine intervention I come across this non-profit organization actually my ex-wife and my fire chief buddy contacted them because I had four kittens at home. And I'm not playing when I tell you every time I was getting shot all I could think about was who's going to take care of these critters. So I survived and I make my way into the hospital system my fire chief buddy gives me a card with Jeff Dorson's contact. I reach out and let him know that eventually I'm going to get out of here I'm alive and I miss my kittens. Because at this point my mouth is wired shut and I can't eat anything he comes on over and brings me smoothies a bunch of them but peanut butter and protein and banana my favorite. Chicken, broth vegetable broth, like for real taking care of somebody who he doesn't even know. Because I had a divine intervention I can only say that these people work for Christ they are his team because it's an extension of the intervention that helped me out beyond belief. I'm a hard worker that's work for years never had my hand out for anything but these people had a donation drive and gave me cash and a check I didn't even want it because I didn't feel Worthy he assured me it is God's work and I had to assume he's correct. Jeff is a saint there's no other word the police have my wallet and car as evidence since the gunman actually ransacked it. He saw further than I did cuz I didn't think about the all that in the fog of war.I just got back from Winn-Dixie with a bunch of jello and soups things I can grind up and after I eat. I whole hardly give this organization five stars they're not fake they're not out to get anybody they are just here to help. A true extension of God, the reasons why nonprofits should exist. I would add more photos than this but I'm only allowed 3mb. These people were here for me they don't know who I am but they care about souls and they definitely care about our buddies . I aligned with these folks and somehow ended up in their orbit, I'm not worthy to know these people and yet here I am and here they are. But they're not even finished yet and please forgive any lack of punctuation I am completely using voice to text I have one eye now , being shot in the head and one hand so I can barely see. Like I said it's not over yet the police still have my vehicle and impound for evidence and my wallet and yet they're still going to come pick me up in a few days and help me out, move me around so I can get somethings done and visit my crew if cats.I can get anything done without my vehicle and without my wallet that the police have from my vehicle. Thank you humane society of Louisiana. The director Jeff Dorson. is a true saint. My life is forever changed and this team had a part in it thank you guys so very much from the bottom of my heart.
Amazing place. A stray cat that I feed named "Chance" was attacked by a large dog a couple of days ago. I didn't think he was going to make it. Mrs. Dana helped me tremendously. I can't thank you enough! ❤
Best non-profit animal related group out there! They touch on so many issues, showing empathy and compassion for EVERY living creature, not just dogs & cats like other groups.
