Mission: Hope renewed international (hri) began in 2010 with the determination to make a sustainable difference in the lives of the people of guatemala. The guiding question around which the organization operates is, "how do we exemplify jesus' love for the poor, while creating opportunities for people in at-risk communities without creating dependency on an organization? " therefore, the mission of the organization is to share the love of christ by providing care, education, employment and mentoring in at-risk communities. Our goal is to serve, equip, and empower the people in the communities where we work so they can ultimately help themselves, thereby creating dependability instead of dependency.
Programs: Hope renewed is developing self-sufficient businesses in areas of extreme poverty. We are currently building a bakery which will serve as a distributor to small stores in la limonada. The bakery will be managed by one of our scholars who graduated college with a degree in culinary arts. Priority for jobs will be given to adults in our scholarship program, and to others who commit to going back to school. The overall mission is to provide gainful employment with fair wages and benefits to the people of la limonada.
nearly 3,000 people call the city dump home, in that their homes are literally on and surrounded by millions of pounds of garbage. Stray dogs, parasites, the smell of methane gas, no running water and no sewer system is the daily reality for these people. Most families make their living at the dump, searching the garbage for food, recyclables and other discarded items they can sell. Hope renewed is focused on one specific community among several in the the city dump. The core of our operation in this community is hope center i, constructed with the help of many of our mission teams over the course of 2011. Understanding the importance of education to the future of the people here, in 2012 hope renewed opened a school in the community center for the kids. We started with only 35 kids enrolled in this accredited program and the numbers continue to grow as the need in the community continues to grow. Our future plans and the possibilities for hope center i are endless. Adult education, church services, community programs and a carpentry workshop are just a few possibilities for the future.
hope renewed's girl's home is located about 4 hours away from guatemala city, guatemala. This girl's home exemplifies hope renewed's dedication to orphan care and to the guatemalan community. The home covers approximately 5 beautiful acres and it houses approximately 30 girls from ages 517 years old. In 2007, it was estimated that guatemala's orphan population was more than 370,000. While this number would be significant in any country, when you consider guatemala's small population of only 15 million people, this percentage is staggering. This number continues to grow as international adoptions from guatemala have ceased since 2007. This has created a situation across the country of overcrowded orphanages, poor living conditions and in many cases, abandonment. Providing a safe, nurturing, and god-centered environment for our girls, is our first priority. We are also devoted to instilling and modeling the importance of education, health, and positive character development as well as spiritual and mental health. We believe in our girls here at mazatenango and the power they have to eventually change a nation. As orphanages struggle to manage through this growing problem, hope renewed's mission is to walk alongside our girls, to help equip them with basic necessities for their well-being now,` and in the future as young adults. In the middle of a nearly hopeless orphan crisis in guatemala, our girls are flourishing, surrounded by loving care, excelling academically and preparing for the future.
one of hope renewed's most successful endeavors has been in the prison system in guatemala city. The program included education, and vocational training through cut and sew, and screen printing businesses in the men's and women's prisons respectively. That program have now branched off into its own for-profit business run by hri co-founder ashley williams, and is no longer a part of hope renewed international.
