I've been volunteering with Heroic Gardens for three years this summer. I have a few comments:
*It's incredibly rewarding - I've made personal connections with other volunteers and project beneficiaries that have changed my life and the lives of others.
*It's fun - I get some exercise and get to play in the dirt! Somehow gardening is never a chore in someone else's yard.
*It's educational - I've learned so much that I've been able to take back to my garden. My yard is thriving as a result.
Collie, the organization's Founder, is passionate and organized but she's also an amazing person - she's fun and her love for what we're doing shows through in every project.
While I'm now a board member, it all started through my volunteer experience. Join us!

Nonprofit Overview
Causes: Environment, Environmental Beautification, Garden Clubs, Health, Military & Veterans Organizations, Patient & Family Support, Veterans
Mission: Help Veterans and caregivers enhance their mental and physical well-being by connecting with the healing power of plants and nature
Results: Over 2600 Veterans, 240 caregivers and 100 health care professionals have participated in our programming. Last year, we had over 300 volunteers that donated over 25,000 hours of service. We have received a commendation from the US Department of Military Affairs and the Undersecretary of Health for our Outstanding Programming. In 2025, we will expand our programming and open a Veteran Workforce Development initiative, The Sunflower Farm at Pennypack
Target demographics: Veterans and their Caregivers
Direct beneficiaries per year: Over 1200 veterans in our community
Geographic areas served: Pennsylvania, Philadelphia Suburbs, Southern New Jersey, Delaware
Programs: Land transformation and Social Therapeutic Horticulture Classes. We also will open a Farm in Philadelphia in July 2025.
