Helping the Homeless and the volunteers tirelessly serve those who need food. I love their thrift store and know they have invested so much time and love. I’ve watched the Roundy’s continually serve over the last 17 years I’ve lived here and I’m proud that we serve in Gloucester community together.

My giving story actually began in 2010.. And since became a lifestyle. I participated in a 'Coat Drive' that generated tons of coats to give to people in need, only 4 people showed up. So we took the rest to an area in downtown Richmond VA to distribute to the homeless along with left over cold pizza and bottled water. Encountered a woman who searched through all the bags of coats, who passed over several her size. Asked if I could help her find a coat and she shook her head, and quietly said 'I was looking for a blanket.' I went to my van, and found an old, dirty, dog-bitten fleece red blanket, almost ashamed to even show it to her, but I did. I told her this was the only blanket I could find, apologizing we didn't think to bring blankets. She reached out her hand, touched it; then brought it close to her face, and a slight smile emerged. 'Can I have it?' She asked. I told her yes, apologizing for its condition. She wrapped herself up in it like a tootsie roll, waddled over to the curb, laid down on the grass, and fell asleep. Right at that time, flurries began to fall, landing softly upon her. We left, but I left part of my heart with that unnamed woman, unable to get her off my mind. Here I was, warm, heading home to a warm bed in a warm home, while she slept wrapped a dirty blanket with holes out in the snow...I prayed for her provision, and vowed to live my life, for the rest of my life, helping the homeless. Every year since, I've participated in outreaches, gathered coats, blankets, and other winter wear, as well as toiletries, and distribute to the homeless. Several we were able to help get off the streets into homes.

I hope to help be a difference. The organization is MIDDLE PENINSULA CHRISTIAN HOMELESS CENTER DBA HELPING THE HOMELESS. I help fundraise and serve, with the goal of one day opening an actual homeless center where the homeless may find shelter and hope for a new start in life, for indeed, the homeless have helped change my life. Helping the homeless helped me... Become more appreciative of life, and appreciate the value of human life over and above any material thing.
