As a social work major volunteering with Helping Communities in Crisis has given me a clearer view of the challenges a non-profit organization experiences. Helping Communities in Crisis focuses on the communities in Boston with the highest HIV/AIDS rates. They assist with holiday food baskets for people living with HIV/AIDS in the community. I admire the CEO, as he he is visually disabled and yet he runs a organization for such a large cause.
HCC, Inc. is a non profit, faith based, HIV/AIDS awareness organization. I have been indirectly involved with the organization since its inception. They were birthed out of the church, but they have branched out into the communities in which they having seen the need for more awareness and intervention of the disease. They are truly servers of the community and are always looking for ways to reach out to those who are not only infected with the disease, but also to those who are affected by the stigma of being associated with the disease.
The founder and president of the organization, Mr. David Hawkesworth, never stops looking for ways to reach out to the community. The organization engages in bake sales in highly populated and used locations where they distribute informational pamplets and other liturature; an annual walk to raise funds; they participate in the week of prayer for the healing of HIV/AIDS; and reserves a Sunday in the year, during the National Week of Prayer where he brings a speaker to his Church to speak with the congregation on the subject and answer any questions they may have.
Mr. Hawksworth is visually impaired and lives with the AIDS virus, yet he never gives up, never gets tired of fighting for knowledge to share with the population. Believing that the people perish for the lack of knowledge, David's goal is to spread knowledge about the prevention of HIV/AIDS where ever he goes. He has a great passion for his mission.
As the Oranization's Logo states, David is truly a "Soldier in the Fight Against HIV/AIDS" and he invokes the same degree of enthusiasm and zeal from all who serves alongside him.
