Mission: Advances policy solutions to make our state a healthier place
Results: In 2013, Health First Wisconsin built successful grassroots, media, and policy campaigns that made a real difference in public health. In the 2013-2015 state budget, we retained level funding for the state Tobacco Prevention and Control Program by organizing testimony and letters from statewide coalitions and community advocates Funding to the Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin program was also restored in the 2013-2015 state budget.This grant program fuels local economies and supports producers who provide locally-grown fruits and vegetables. In March 2013, we launched the state’s first-ever report detailing the costs of alcohol to our state, called The Burden of Excessive Alcohol Use in Wisconsin. This report changed the conversation on Wisconsin's alcohol culture. Health First Wisconsin has developed a robust grassroots communication system. Since April, over 100,000 emails have reached inboxes across Wisconsin — keeping people updated with the latest news, health-based evidence, and advocacy opportunities. Hundreds of medical and graduate students have received real-life training about public health advocacy and developed important skills to become the next generation of advocates

Direct beneficiaries per year: support Wisconsin residents to quit smoking by ensuring funding for the QuitLine, encouraged the legislature to support "Buy Local, Buy WI," and educated thousands about the burden of alcohol abuse.
